A Great Outreach Opportunity
Over the last couple of decades most people in our society have become more isolated with many treating their home as a place of refuge from those on the outside. The bottom line, as it relates to outreach, is that many people in our society do not appreciate people who show up at their doorstep for a visit. In the past, churches used home visits as a means to witness and tell others about their church’s ministry; however this has become offensive and considered rude in our culture.
Therefore the pastors here at PCC are attempting to find new ways to fulfill the mandate God gives us in His Word to reach people with the Gospel.
“Go(to them) out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” (Luke 14:23)
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go (to them)therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
While our attempt to reach others with the Gospel is more challenging we are still called to follow these mandates. With this in mind, we as pastors are taking more of an approach of getting into the path of our community through local community events. This could include handing out water at community races, serving our community in creative ways, showing our appreciation for those in our community, and having a presence where large crowds meet.
One opportunity that has been made available to us is our participation at the “7th Inning Stretch”—an event held each year here in Shelby that is tied to the American Legion World Series in August. On Saturday, August 10, 2019 we have been given the opportunity to help with the 5K Race associated with the event, and also sponsor and host the Corn Hole Tournament at the event. We have been told that this event is the 2nd highest attended event each year in our community—second only to the CC Fair.
As a result of our participation we will be able to put up our PCC tents and set up tables with information concerning the Gospel and our church’s ministries. We see this as a great opportunity to get into the path of our community in our attempt to make Jesus known to our neighbors. I hope you will make it a point to pray for this endeavor, and if able, join us as we serve our community in our attempt to reach it with the life-changing message of God’s Truth.
