Spiritual Maturing - Part 2
Pastor: Bryan Glisson Series: Royal Invitation: Part 3- Glory Scripture: Romans 14:1–13
Introduction: One of the true marks of maturity is being able to agree to disagree on issues that do not require turning one’s back on conviction or God’s truth.
This passage deals with what believers are to do when they disagree on non-moral issues--things that are not clearly discerned.
The Situation—Disputable Matters
- The Definition: an issue that the Bible is silent on or does not give a clear principle
- The Battle: Preference (Preferred) vs. Principle (Law)
- 1st Century Examples—issues of diet and days
- 21st Century Examples—dancing, playing cards, watching TV, driving cars, using electricity, wearing makeup
The Solution—Acceptance
- Ways To Accept Those Who Disagree With You:
Do not label them (Romans 14:1-2)
Do not judge them (Romans 14:3a)
Do not try to change them (Romans 14:4)
- Reasons To Accept Those Who Disagree With You:
God has already accepted them (Romans 14:3b) (Romans 15:7)
It is not your responsibility to judge (Romans 14:4)
You do not know their motives (Romans 14:5-6)
You have a bond with each other (Romans 14:7)
Only Christ has the right to judge (Romans 14:8-9)
You are only accountable for yourself (Romans 14:10-12)
You are not to be a stumbling block (Romans 14:13)
Application: Unity is a priority in the Church. To agree to disagree and still love and accept each other is a mark of maturity.
