When You Face Obstacles

July 14, 2019 Pastor: Bryan Glisson Series: Flourish

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:17–20

Definition of Flourish: to be healthy and thriving; to blossom; to be at the height of influence

Introduction: Here in chapter 2, Paul is very transparent as he defends himself from the attacks and rumors that have been brought against him; then in verses 17-20 he gives us insight into what keeps him passionate about serving others even when facing these obstacles.

The Absence of Paul

  • The Charge: Paul did not care about the them

  • The Response: Paul longed to be with them (1 Thessalonians 2:17)

The Hindrance of the Enemy

  • The Attempts: Paul tries to come to them (1 Thessalonians 2:18a)

  • The Obstacle: Satan (1 Thessalonians 2:18b)

The Enemy Hinders The Follower Through:

                   --suffering  (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)

                   --others  (Matthew 16:23)

                   --temptation  (Luke 4:13)

                   --deceit  (2 Corinthians 11:14)  (John 8:44)

The Enemy Is Limited When It Comes To Hindering:

--he must have permission  (Job & Peter)

--he cannot ultimately hinder the work of God  (Paul & Jesus)

The Presence of the Lord

  • The Crowns for Followers

Crown of Rejoicing (1 Thessalonians 2:19a)

Crown of Perfection  (1 Corinthians 9:24-25)

Crown of Righteousness  (2 Timothy 4:8)

             Crown of Life  (James 1:12)

Crown of Glory  (1 Peter 5:4)

  • The Coming of Christ (1 Thessalonians 2:19b-20)

Application: Are you living today overcoming the obstacles of this world for the crowns of the Kingdom to come?  (Revelation 4:10-11)
