When Living In Truth - Part 2

Introduction:  In this text, Paul instructs us with seven practical foundational statements concerning how to live a successful Christian Life. These statements are in the present tense meaning the content of these statements are to be continuous.

For the Christian Life to be successful these statements must be in effect.

Be Joyful—Sorrow To Glory  (I Thessalonians 5:16)

Be Prayerful—Problems To Praise  (I Thessalonians 5:17)

Be Thankful—Request To Gratitude  (I Thessalonians 5:18)

Be Responsive—Darkness to Light

  • To the Spirit (I Thessalonians 5:19)

            He Speaks  (Revelation 2:7a)

            He Intercedes  (Romans 8:26)

            He Indwells  (1 Corinthians 3:16)

            He Comforts (John 14:26a)

            He Teaches (John 14:26b)

            He Convicts (John 16:8)

            He Guides (John 16:13)

            He Glorifies Jesus (John 16:14)

            He Reassures  (Romans 8:16)

            He Gives Gifts  (1 Corinthians 12:11)

            He Empowers  (Acts 1:8)

Evidence of quenching the Holy Spirit  (Galatians 5:19-21)

--prideful       --rebellious                --fearful

--worried       --lack of discipline

Evidence of “not” quenching the Holy Spirit  (Galatians 5:22-23)

--love for those difficult to love

--ability to forgive

--compassion for those hurting

--joy and peace in the midst of difficult circumstances

--ability to endure difficulty with strength and grace

--humility in personal accomplishments

--rejection of sinful impulses with increasing strength

The Process of Receiving God’s Word

--revelation—God revealing Himself to creation

--inspiration—God working in the hearts of human writers inspiring them to write His Word  (2 Timothy 3:16a)

--interpretation—determining the intended meaningof God’s Word  (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

--illumination—the Holy Spirit assisting one in gaining both the sense and significance of God’s Word  (1 Corinthians 2:10,16)

--application—determining the relevance of God’s Word and then actively responding  (James 1:19-27)

The Purpose of God’s Word

--to convict  (Hebrews 4:12)

--to convert  (Psalm 19:7a)

--to cleanse  (1 John 1:9)

--to change  (2 Corinthians 3:18)

--to comfort   (Romans 15:4)

--to challenge  (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

--to reveal God’s character  (1 Peter 1:16)

 

Be Discerning—Evil to Good

  • Examine what is Before Us (I Thessalonians 5:21a)
  • Embrace what is Good (I Thessalonians 5:21b)
  • Evade and Escape what is Evil (I Thessalonians 5:22)

Application:

Are these commands present in your life?

While thinking back over last week, do you see how at least one of these commands, if obeyed, would have helped you in a particular situation or circumstance?

Of the commands which do you find the most difficult to follow?
