FAITH THAT WORKS
“The Maturing of Faith”
James 1:1-4
Series Introduction: James was the half brother of Jesus and pastor of a Church in Jerusalem. The purpose of the book of James is to practically demonstrate the correlation between a true follower of Jesus and his or her behavior.
Introduction: Trials, problems, disappointments all can be expected in this fallen world, but they don’t have to be wasted. God can use these to develop and mature your faith. Those with a mature faith have the potential to live above trials and not under them.
The Possibilities of Trials
- They are intended to bring about evaluation (James 1:2a)
- They are intended to produce joy (James 1:2b)
The Problem with Trials
- They will come (James 1:2c)
- They will come in many colors (James 1:2d)
The Process of Trials
- Testing your faith (James 1:3a) (1 Peter 1:7)
- Teaching you patience (James 1:3b)
The Purpose of Trials
- To bring about maturity in you: (James 1:4a)
Through bringing humility
Through weaning from the things of this world
Through focusing on the eternal
Through revealing what you truly love
- To bring about completion in you: (James 1:4b)
Through demonstrating the value of God’s blessings
Through raising to greater usefulness for God’s purposes
Application: When dealing with trials you must look for the possibilities. The only way to see the possibilities is to see the big picture. Would you say, the way you navigate through the trials, problems, and disappointments of your life, prove the genuineness of your faith?
FAITH THAT WORKS
“The Great Need For Wisdom”
James 1:5-8
Introduction: Wisdom is not merely knowledge and intelligence. Wisdom is the ability to take the knowledge that you acquire, and apply that knowledge to everyday problems and situations. Biblically it is the ability to apply God’s truth and judgments to your circumstances and trials.
Knowledge + Direction (God’s Truth) + Experience = Wisdom
The Shortage of Wisdom (James 1:5a)
- Timing—When?
- Choosing—What?
- Maturing—Why?
You need wisdom so you will not waste the opportunities God gives to mature you.
The Source of Wisdom (James 1:5b)
The Secret of Wisdom
- The Promise of Your Prayer
When you ask God for wisdom He gives it abundantly (James 1:5c)
When you ask God for wisdom He gives it freely (1:5d)
- The Problem With Your Prayer
When you ask God for wisdom with a doubting mind you receive nothing (James 1:6-7)
When you ask God for wisdom with a double mind you receive nothing (James 1:8)
Application: Someone has said that knowledge is the ability to take things apart; while wisdom is the ability to put things together.
Where do you see yourself in the midst of your trials? More importantly, where do you see God in the midst of your trials? You ability to see depends upon Godly wisdom?

Worthy Of Your Name
You're my King
My King
Rumors of the Son of Man
Stories of a Savior
Holiness with human hands
Treasure for the traitor
No ear had heard, no eye had seen
The Image of the Father
Until heaven came to live with me
A rescue like no other
Yes You are worthy
You are worthy
You are worthy of Your Name
Yes You are worthy
You are worthy of Your Name
Jesus
You did not speak, You made no sound
You died for Your accusers
As Your blood fell to the ground
You redefined my future
On the day when You arose
The darkness ran for cover
For the King of kings has claimed His throne
Now until forever
Yes You are worthy
You are worthy of Your Name
You are worthy
You are worthy of Your Name
Jesus
You're my author, my maker
My ransom, my Savior
My refuge, my hiding place
You're my helper, my healer
My blessed redeemer
My answer, my saving grace
You're my hope, in the shadows
My strength, in the battle
My anchor, for all my days
And You stand, by my side
And You stood, in my place
Jesus, no other name
No, only Jesus, no other name
You are worthy
You are worthy of Your Name
Yes You are worthy
You are worthy of Your Name
Goodness Of God
I love You, Lord
For Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
Cause all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
And in darkest night You are close like no other
I've known You as a Father
I've known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God
And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
With my life laid down, I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
'Cause Your goodness is running after, it's running after me
And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
Great Are You Lord
And all the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
Great are You, Lord
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
To You only
