MIXED MESSAGES

Sermon Series Introduction: How does a “Follower of Jesus” identify truth in a fallen world of mixed messages? The obvious answer is God’s Word and what the “Follower of Jesus” believes about it. Is it truly God’s Word?

What does His Word say about Him, you, the world and truth? This is the beginning of determining what is truth in the mixed messages surrounding you.

God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
God (Genesis 1:1) (Psalm 99:9)
Us  (Romans 3:23) (Romans 5:8)
The Fallen World (John 1:10) (John 18:36) (Ephesians 6:12)

Tie These Thoughts Together and You Have:
--no absolute truth—no truth
--no God—no hope
--a godless society—no accountability
--evolution not creation—no purpose
--pleasure not responsibility—no restraint

Jesus and this Fallen World
   (Matthew 22:21)

You in this Fallen World
   (Philippians 3:20)

“…no longer be immature like children. [That] we won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. [That] we will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.”  (Ephesians 4:14—NLT)

MIXED MESSAGES
“Regarding Government”
Romans 13:1-7

The Nature of Government

  • It is Part of God’s Plan (Romans 13:1-2)
  • It’s Leaders are God’s Servants (Romans 13:3-4a)
  • It is only Temporary  (1 Corinthians 15:24)

The Purposes of Government

  • To Protect Human Life  (Exodus 20:13) (Genesis 9:6)
  • To Make Laws that Protect Personal & Property Rights  (Exodus 20:15, 17)
  • To Handle Disputes Between People  (Deuteronomy 1:12-13)
  • To Punish Lawbreakers (Romans 13:4)

The Response & Responsibility to Government

  • To Obey If Possible (Romans 13:5)
  • To Pray for Leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2)
  • To Pay Taxes (Romans 13:6-7)
  • To Influence for Good (Matthew 5:13-16)

Application: The whole counsel of God’s Word implies that a “Follower of Jesus” will be a model citizen--a citizen of submission (when possible), of prayer (always), and of influence (by voting).

Remember:  For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20)

Things to consider when responding to government:

  1. We have the privilege to participate in our government by voting and having a voice and we should.
  1. God does not call us to be a republican or a democrat.  (We may choose to work with a party but our mandate comes from God)
--parties are manmade and are filled by fallen men and women
--our first allegiance is to God; not a political party
--party platforms change over the years but God’s Word stands forever
  1. Those in leadership including Presidents are fallen people.
--Daniel worked closely and successfully with those who did not profess His God
--God can use a broken vessel to accomplish His will and to answer the prayers of His people
  1. Jesus when He walked the earth did not become consumed with government affairs.
--Jesus knew He and His mission was the lead story  and is today our lead story
  1. We are called to pray for change and influence by being salt and light.
--therefore we need to be informed with issues and then we need to participate
  1. There has never been a perfect vote.
--we are not voting for perfect people, perfect parties nor perfect party platforms
  1. We are to vote for what we believe is God’s platform on issues realizing that because we are in a fallen world it will not translate perfectly nor be clear at times.
--right to life, justice, handling of immigrants, etc (James 1:5) (Philippians 1:9)
