MIXED MESSAGES
“Regarding Life”
Psalm 139; Various Passages

Sermon Series Introduction: How does a “Follower of Jesus” identify truth in a fallen world of mixed messages? The obvious answer is God’s Word and what the “Follower of Jesus” believes about it. Is it truly God’s Word? (Psalm 119:105-116)

Introduction: The Bible clearly teaches that there are times when “Followers Of Jesus” are to believe and live counter-culture. For that to happen we must know how to distinguish between the mixed messages of the society in which we live and God’s truth. This would include our views concerning life.

The Biblical worldview teaches that
there is a God who created us
and revealed His absolute truth to us
in the Bible.

In our sinful nature
we rebelled against His will

but God in His love sent His Son
to die for us

and now we have
the hope of eternal life
only through Him.

All events in life
even the painful ones
have meaning.

The secular worldview teaches that
we don’t know if there is a God.

We are here
by random acts of evolution.

There are no absolute moral values
and no absolute truth

We are free to live as we please
and all viewpoints
are equally valid
and must be tolerated.

People are basically good
and will do the right thing
if given the right environment.

Jesus Christ was a good moral teacher,
but just one of many.

We don’t know
what happens when we die,
so we might as well
live for this life only.

Biblical Worldview Concerning:

Abortion

  • Life in the Womb is Sacred to God (Psalm 139:13)
  • Life in the Womb must be Protected (Exodus 21:22-23)
  • Our Bodies Belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Euthanasia  (Terms Association w/Euthanasia)

  • Death w/Dignity
  • Mercy Killing (Romans 5:3-5)
  • Death Selection (Jeremiah 10:23) (Psalm 139:16)

Capital Punishment—Deterrent
  (Genesis 9:6)

  • Instituted by God to Protect Life (Exodus 21:12)
  • Administered by Government (Romans 13:4)
  • Administered in the Case of Deliberate, Premeditated, Proven Murder (Exodus 21:14) (Deuteronomy 17:6)
  • Administered Swiftly (Ecclesiastes 8:11)
  • Administered Without Favoritism (Proverbs 29:7)

War—Just War
  (Ecclesiastes 3:1,8b) (Psalm 68:30d)

  • Should Only Be Defensive
  • Should Only Be Proportionate
  • Should Only Be Declared by a Legitimate Authority
  • Should Minimize Civilian Casualties

Application: God’s Word teaches that life is sacred and needs to be protected; the unborn, the elderly, the victims who have been murdered, and those under attack from an aggressor nation.

“See to it that no one takes you captive
through hollow and deceptive philosophy,
which depends on human tradition
and the basic principles of this world (Secular Worldview)

rather than on Christ (Biblical Worldview).”     (Colossians 2:8)
