“Regarding Marriage”

Sermon Series Introduction: How does a “Follower of Jesus” identify truth in a fallen world of mixed messages? The obvious answer is God’s Word and what the “Follower of Jesus” believes about it. Is it truly God’s Word?

Introduction: The Bible clearly teaches that there are times when we are to believe and live counter-culture. This would include a defense of a Biblical worldview of marriage.

The Establishment of Marriage (Genesis 2:18-24)

The Why?

• To experience the deepest relationship possible on earth (Genesis 2:25)
• To provide children with a secure, loving environment in which to grow  (Deuteronomy 6:1-2, Deuteronomy 6:5-7)
• To demonstrate a tangible example of His relationship with us (Ephesians 5:22-32)

The Enemies of Marriage 

The Who?

• The Deceiver (Genesis 3:1-8)
• The Selfish (Philippians 2:3) (Ephesians 5:33) (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a)

The What?

• Co-habitation (Hebrews 13:4)
• Homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22) (Romans 1:24-27) (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) (1 Peter 2:11)
• Divorce (Malachi 2:16a)

Application: It is important that “Followers of Jesus” know how to counter the mixed messages of our day with the truths of God’s Word. Are you able and willing to take the Word of God and stand against the secular worldview to protect your marriage and the future of your children?

A Secular Worldview of Life

I will live my life according to these beliefs 

God does not exist 

It is just foolish to think 

That there is a God with a cosmic plan

That an all-powerful God brings redemption and healing to the pain and suffering in the world

It is a comforting thought

However

It is only wishful thinking

People can do as they please without eternal consequences

The idea that

I am deserving of Hell 

Because of sin 

Is a lie meant to make me a slave to those in power

"The more you have, the happier you will be."

Our existence has no grand meaning or purpose

In a world with no God

There is freedom to be who I want to be 

But with God

Everything is fine

It is ridiculous to think

I am lost and in need of saving
