“The Battle Against The World”
1 John 2:15-17, 24-27; Other Selected Passages

Introduction: We as “Followers of Jesus” are under attack on three fronts—the enemy, the world, and our flesh—and we need to be aware and alert. To be successful in this battle for our soul we must analyze our enemy, utilize our weaponry, and realize our victory.

The Meaning & Messages of the World  (1 John 2:15)

Note: The Greek word for “world” is “Kosmos;" which we get our word cosmopolitan; speaking of order and arrangement; a system of ideas or activities--the operation of the World.

• The Story of the World (Genesis 3:1-24) (Genesis 1:31) (Romans 5:12)

• The Systems of the World (Ephesians 2:1-2)

           Major Movements
              --Secularization—process where Christianity & the Church are no longer the dominant influence in society
              --Privatization—process where a person’s private life should not influence their public life
              --Pluralization—process of being tolerant of all life-styles and beliefs—truth is not absolute

            Fallout from Major Movements
              --Relativism—“What is true for you is true for you; and what is true for me is true for me.”
              --Individualism—“I am under no authority and accountable to no one."
              --Hedonism—“If it makes me happy and does not hurt anyone, then it is okay.”
              --Naturalism—“Everything is meaningless and untrue if it cannot be proven by what I feel, taste, see, or hear.”

The Methods of the World

• The Persuasion of the World—to squeeze you into its mold (Romans 12:1-2)

• The Pressures from the World (1 John 2:16a)
      Desires Activated By Sight--“Lust of the eyes”—See it
      Desires Conceived By The Mind--“Lust of the flesh”—Want it
      Desires Surrendered To Sin--“Pride of life”—Deserve it

• The Pain of the World (1 John 2:16b) (Psalm 51)
      --loss of self-respect               
      --loss of respect from others
      --loss of joy                         
      --loss of family
      --loss of health
      --loss of life 
      --loss of hope

The Mastery of the World  (1 John 2:17)
