His Cultivation”
1 Samuel 16-18

Definition of Cultivation: The process of refinement, growth, or development—the idea of maturing.

Introduction: God is in the process of maturing us into the person He desires us to be. In theological terms this process is called sanctification. This process is clearly scene in the life of David.

The Music:  (Psalm 25:1-5, Psalm 8-9)

How Does God Cultivate a Person?

He Uses the Means of Solitude

  • The Physical Surroundings of Solitude (1 Samuel 16:19)
  • The Heart Songs of Solitude (Psalm 8)

He Uses the Means of Secrecy

  • Faithful when unacknowledged and unappreciated (1 Samuel 16:11)
  • Prepared in private before used in public (16:18)

He Uses the Means of Smallness (limited use)  (1 Samuel 16:19; 1 Samuel 17:15)

  • It brings forth Humbleness (Psalm 40:4-5, Psalm 40:17a)
  • It brings forth Faithfulness (Psalm 34:1-3) (1 Timothy 3:6)

He Uses the Means of Struggle

  • The Mauling Beasts (1 Samuel 17:34-37)
  • The Menacing Giant (1 Samuel 17:40-51)
  • The Mad King (1 Samuel 18:9-11)

He Uses the Means of Staying

  • OT Terminology—Wait (Psalms 25:21) (Psalm 27:14) (Psalm 37:7,9,34)
  • NT Terminology—Abide”  (John 15:4-5)

Footnote:  “Waiting” or “Abiding” Produces:

Inner Courage instead of inner Conflict
Faith instead of Fear
Discovery instead of Discouragement
Joy instead of Jealousy
Focus instead of Fatigue
Presence instead of Pressure

Application: God is working out His purposes in you through the same tools He used in the life of David.  By what means, is God working in you?

“Therefore, we do not lose heart.

Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day

For our light affliction,
which is but for a moment,
is working for us
a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,

while we do not look at the things which are seen,
but at the things which are not seen.

For the things which are seen are temporary,
but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
(2 Corinthians 4:16-18)
