“His Character”
1 Samuel 18, 1 Samuel 24

Thoughts Concerning Character: 

--it is made of the inner reality and quality in which thoughts, speech, decisions, behaviors, and relations are rooted

--its core lies deeper than values and far deeper than philosophies, allegiances, or accomplishments

--it is the habits of the heart

--it is a long obedience in the same direction

--it is more than a collection of occasional behaviors or a set of good intentions; it is rather who we are through and through

--Hebrew thought sees it as morality and carries the idea of “righteousness” which is not just a matter of what we do or say but is the substance from which we operate—a righteous core of existence found in God

--it determines behavior just as behavior demonstrates it

Introduction: When we study the lives of King Saul and the soon to be King David, we find a stark contrast in their character. Saul was small in character, while David was large in character.

The Purity of David’s Life

Application: As you observe David’s life, you will find that it was not perfect; but it was a life built on character. The foundation his character was built on his faith in his God. Are you a person of character?
