BEHIND THE MUSIC—KING DAVID 
“His Corruption—Part 2”
Psalm 51:1-3; 2 Samuel 12-18

Introduction: King David’s godly character begins to erode into what many call the corrupted years of his life. This did not happen overnight--it involved a steady progression of disobedience, discontentment and lack of discipline that seemed to be motivated by a mid-life crisis.  (1 Kings 15:5)

The Expression of David’s Confession  (Psalm 51)

• Transgression—stepping over the line or crossing boundaries (Psalm 51:1)
• Iniquity—a twisting; a perverting (Psalm 51:2)
• Sin—missing a mark or standard (Psalm 51:3)

The Extension of David’s Conduct

• The Confrontation of David’s Sin (2 Samuel 12:1-12)
• The Confession of David’s Sin (2 Samuel 12:13-15a)
• The Consequences of David Sin (2 Samuel 12:15b-23)
• The Corruption of David’s Children (2 Samuel 13-18)

Application: David was content with the life God called him to live. God was his substance for life and pleasing Him was all that mattered. But then David became discontent. From there he believed, as many, that an affair would satisfy his discontent heart. This led to his corruption.  

When you are not content in God’s provision for your life then you become vulnerable to corruption. Are you content in God’s provision for your life? Or are you vulnerable to follow the path of David? 

“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”      (Psalm 23:1)

What is a mid-life crisis?  Has been called:
--a 2^nd Childhood
--a 2^nd Adolescence
--male menopause 
--an attempt to side-step mortality

Can affect every area of a man’s life:
--spiritually
--emotionally
--mentally
--physically
--relationally
--occupationally

Do all men go through a mid-life crisis?

Mid-life?  Yes
Mid-life Crisis?  No

What are the symptoms of a mid-life crisis?
--lack of motivation
--feelings of being trapped
--self-doubt 
--self-pity
--discouragement
--depression
--worthlessness
--aging in appearance
--physically—fatigued, testosterone levels drop
(the reaction to these symptoms can become dangerous)

What makes a mid-life crisis so dangerous?
--men don’t talk about it—the enemy isolates them
--risk of destroying integrity and influence
--radical decisions causing radical damages and even destruction of meaningful relationships through affairs or financial irresponsibility
--risk of costly deception (I never knew I was capable of…)

“A young man looks to the future (hopes, goals, dreams) an old man looks to the past (accomplishments, regrets) while a mid-life man looks to the here and now.”

--loses sight of consequences
--loses sight of what matters most
--can be the most selfish time of a man’s life
--entitlement due past accomplishments
--panic due to facing mortality (never got to do this or that)
--turns to distractions or escapes to fill the void of lost youth

“A soul with a void can be very dangerous because there is always a motivation to fill the void at any cost.”

What a man turns to in his attempt to fill the void can turn out to be the most dangerous part of his mid-life crisis.

What is at the core of a mid-life crisis?
--a man not only facing his mortality but also grieving the loss of his youth

“Therefore we do not lose heart (don’t be discouraged). Though outwardly (bodily) we are wasting away, yet inwardly (spiritually) we are being renewed (a new work) day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16)

How to survive a mid-life crisis?
--be aware of mid-life crisis grieving stages 
     1) denial 
     2) anger/frustration 
     3) reply glory days or regrets
     4) depression 
     5) withdrawal   
     6) acceptance (older/wiser)
--put safeguards in place (don’t feed fantasies)
--be wise and seek counsel before making life-changing decisions
--reach out to men for support and accountability (an older man)
--re-evaluate expectations for yourself and others (more realistic)
--re-evaluate life goals or create new ones (more realistic)
--invest in others (practice selflessness)
--take better care of yourself (exercise, healthy diet, see doctor)
--move from what your identity is in to who your identity is in
--be aware of spiritual warfare (temptation)

Jesus said, “The thief comes only in order (only reason he has anything to do w/you) to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).”  (John 10:10)

Can anything good come from a mid-life crisis?

Mid-life is a difficult transitional season of life that can be followed by a period of self-evaluation and reassessment.

Mid-life for most men is a transition from success orientation to significance orientation.  (“Half-Time” by Bob Buford)

Scripture for the man in a mid-life crisis

If the crisis has led you to sin: confess & repent  (1 John 1:9) (Acts 3:19)

If the crisis is leading you to temptation to sin: (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Put on the “Armor of God” (Ephesians 6:13-18) (1 Peter 5:8)

Prayer for the man in a mid-life crisis:

Dear God, I feel I am in a battle for my life, family and testimony. I am fighting to maintain my integrity in the midst of a darkness that constantly surrounds me. Simply put, I do not trust myself with certain temptations. I ask You to protect me from evil and give me the strength to overcome it. Impart to me the motivation and desire to not feed my flesh but to renew my spirit.

I ask for Your wisdom during this time of deception that consumes my mind. Help me to realize that my identity (who I really am) is not found in my fears, my youth, my career, or these fantasies that plague my mind but in You and who You say I am.

Help me to be fully aware of the consequences that could follow my decision(s) to act on my evil lust. Help me to be the man my wife, children and church can count on as I face this battle. And most of all help me to not disgrace Your Name.
