SUMMER IN THE PSALMS
PSALM 77
THE ENEMY WITHIN (A MAN NAMED ASAPH)

Introduction: Asaph was facing discouragement and we get a look at his emotions in this passage. Asaph was dealing with envy

Envy is defined as a desire to have a quality, possession, or other desirable attribute belonging to someone else.

Asaph’s Problem (Psalm 73:1-3)

  • His Reality (Psalm 73:1)

Asaph describes those walking with the Lord as “pure in heart” which refers to a total commitment to the Lord (Matthew 5:8)

Being pure in heart is marked by transparency and an unwavering desire to please God in all things. (Psalm 51:10)

  • His Problem (Psalm 73:2)
  • His Doubt (Psalm 73:3) – He envied the arrogant.

 Asaph’s Problem Explained (Psalm 73:4-16)

  • The Prosperity of the Wicked (Psalm 73:4-5)
  • The Behavior of the Wicked (Psalm 73:6) (Proverbs 6:16-19) (Proverbs 15:25a) (I Peter 5:5b)
  • The Benefits of the Wicked (Psalm 73:7)
  • The Corruption of the Wicked (Psalm 73:8-9)
  • The Speech of the Wicked (Psalm 73:10-11)

Asaph’s Problem Caused by Envy (Psalm 73:12-16) (Psalm 71:18)

The Problem Seen Clearly (Psalm 73:17-28)

  • A Return to the House of God (Psalm 73:17a)
  • A Reconsideration of the Wicked Man’s Future (Psalm 73:17b-20)
  • A Repentant Heart (Psalm 73:21-22) (Psalm 51:1-4) (Luke 15:18) (Acts 3:19)
  • A Review of Personal Blessings (Psalm 73:23-26)

Application: (Proverbs 23:17-18) (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

Let’s not be envious of the wicked. Let’s go to the Sanctuary of God. Draw near to God, trust Him, and love Him.

I John 2:17: The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
