THE DOUBT THAT STOLE CHRISTMAS
Matthew 1 & Luke 1
Introduction: The Christmas narrative is full of stories of doubt, and for good reason, because it is filled with one miracle after another. Yet the true miracles were those in which doubt became belief. (Definition of doubt: to call into question something that is true)
The Characters of Doubt
Zacharias (Luke 1:11-18)
Mary (Luke 1:26-34)
Joseph (Matthew 1:18-19)
The Causes of Doubt
Absence of Faith
Lack of Information
Difficult Circumstances
Lack of Experience
Skepticism
Discouragement
Miracles—the supernatural
The Consequences of Doubt
It Brings the Possibility of Judgment (Luke 1:19-20)
It Disrupts God’s Purpose for the Doubter (Luke 1:21-22)
It Steals Joy (Luke 1:59-64)
It Hinders Peace (Luke 1:79)
It Fears and Anticipates the Worst (Matthew 1:18-19)
It Nullifies Prayers (James 1:2-8)
It Opens Hearts to Temptation and then possibly Sin (Genesis 3:1-19)
The Conquering of Doubt
Investigation—self-doubt or doubt others (Luke 1:18)
Examination—doubt to question to belief (Luke 1:34-38)
Obedience—decide to act on what is known (step of faith)(Matthew 1:20-25)
Application: Most of those involved in the Christmas narrative started with doubt that became belief. What doubts in your life need to become belief? What is your doubt costing you in this life and the life to come?
