FIRST THINGS FIRST
Maturing Spiritually—“in favor with God”
John 15:1-17
Series Introduction: In Luke 2:52 we read that Jesus grew in the same four areas we should grow in to be fully mature. Just as He, we are expected to mature mentally, physically, spiritually, and relationally. We also find in Luke 10:27 that we should demonstrate our love for God in the same four areas. (Luke 2:52) (Luke 10:27)
Introduction: To mature spiritually requires us to abide in Jesus. The word “abide” means to remain, to dwell, to endure, to persevere, to stand firm. When used in this context “abiding” literally means, connecting to a source, that sustains health. Of course, the source is found in the person of Jesus.
The Characteristics of Abiding
- Walks in Regeneration
--things must go (reality lived) (John 15:1-2)
--things must be added (reality provided) (John 15:3) - Walks in Communion (John 15:4-8)
- Walks in Affection (John 15:9)
- Walks in Submission (John 15:10)
The Benefits of Abiding
- Facilitates Discovery, instead of Discouragement (John 15:3,15)
- Produces Fruit, instead of Fable (John 15:5)
- Brings Purpose, instead of Perplexity (John 15:7,16)
- Invites Joy, instead of Judgment (shame & guilt) (John 15:11)
- Nurtures Love, instead of Longing (John 15:12-14,17)
Application: As followers of Jesus, we need to realize that healthy living involves maturing mentally, physically, relationally, and most of all, spiritually. If the enemy can defeat us or bring lack of discipline in one of these areas, then he has a foothold in our lives. These footholds can keep us from producing the fruit God intends.
