1ST THINGS 1ST
Maturing In Wisdom
1 Corinthians 2:6-3:3a
Series Introduction: In Luke 2:52 we read that Jesus grew in the same four areas we should grow to be fully mature. Just as He, we are expected to mature mentally, physically, spiritually, and relationally. (Luke 2:52)
Definition of Divine Wisdom: The ability to think and act utilizing knowledge, experience, understanding, discernment, insight, and most importantly spiritual illumination from the Holy Spirit in the midst of life’s deceptions, decisions and circumstances.
Wisdom That Is Revealed (1 Corinthians 2:10-11)
Wisdom That Is Received (1 Corinthians 2:12-13)
Wisdom That Is Discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14-15)
Distorted Wisdom (James 3)
- opposes truth (James 3:14)
- originates from depravity (James 3:15)
--“earthly” in nature—the world (1 John 2:15)
--“sensual” in nature—the flesh (Romans 8:5-7a)
--“demonic” in nature—the enemy (Ephesians 6:10-11) - operates in chaos (James 3:16)
Divine Wisdom (James 3)
- clean in its desires (James 3:17a)
- considerate in its disposition (James 3:17b)
- compassionate in its dealings (James 3:17c)
- consistent in its dealings (James 3:17d)
Wisdom That Is Possessed (1 Corinthians 2:16)
Wisdom That Is Pursued (1 Corinthians 3:1-3a)
How? By: (Philippians 3)
- Maturing (Philippians 3:12)
- Forgetting (Philippians 3:13a)
- Reaching (Philippians 3:13b)
- Pursuing (Philippians 3:14)
- Unifying (Philippians 3:15-16)
Application: Which source of wisdom directs your life? Distorted wisdom—that can be deceptive, manipulative and brings destruction or divine wisdom—that can bring peace and maturity.
