Maturing In Stature (Bodily—Physically)
1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Series Introduction: In Luke 2:52 we read that Jesus grew in the same four areas we should grow to be fully mature. Just as He, we are expected to mature mentally, physically, spiritually, and relationally. We also find in Luke 10:27 that we should demonstrate our love for God in the same four areas.

“So, Jesus answered and said, ‘You shall love the Lord your God 
with all your heart (spiritual health),
with all your soul (emotional health),
with all your strength (physical health),
and
with all your mind (cognitive health),’
and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”   (Luke 10:27)

The Possible Dangers to the Body

Freedom can produce bondage (1 Corinthians 6:12)

“Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims.”    (1 Corth 6:12—The Message)

Freedom can produce over-indulgence (1 Corinthians 6:13a)

The Powerful Declarations concerning the Body
Intended to be an instrument for God’s Glory (1 Corinthians 6:13b)
Intended to be transformed for God’s Glory (1 Corinthians 6:14)

The Painful Defilements against the Body
Dishonors God’s intention—spirit & body are one (1 Corinthians 6:15-17)
Violates the body—can be very destructive (1 Corinthians 6:18)

The Priceless Devotion regarding the Body
Sanctified by the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 6:19a)
--your body is a place where God dwells (1 Corinthians 6:19b) (John 14:17)
--your body is not your own (1 Corinthians 6:19c)

Purchased by the Son of God (1 Corinthians 6:20a)
--glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:20b)
--glorify God in your spirit (1 Corinthians 6:20c)

Application: If you are a follower of Jesus, your body is a temple of the Lord. Do you take care of your body? Do you guard it from those things that may defile it or make it less usable for His glory? In what ways do you invest in your body, to make it more usable for the kingdom of God
