THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST|
“Jesus Delivers”
Colossians 1:15-20

Introduction: These verses are directly addressing an inaccurate view of who Jesus is. The false doctrine said that Jesus was not out of the ordinary nor was He unique. To correct this false doctrine, Paul is addressing the absolute deity and total supremacy of Jesus.

Key Bible Passages Concerning Who Jesus Is:
--Luke 1:26-35               Super-naturally Born
--John 1:1-18, 29-34      God in the Flesh
--Philippians 2:1-11        Judge of All
--Hebrews 1-2                Greater than All
--Colossians 1-2             Supremacy over All

Jesus Above Creation
The Image—He is the Exact Representation of God (Colossians 1:15a) (Hebrews 1:1-3a)
The Firstborn—He is Superior in Position (Colossians 1:15b)
The Creator—He Gives Life Meaning (Colossians 1:16) (Psalm 139:15)
The Sustainer—He Holds Everything Together (Colossians 1:17) (2 Peter 3:10)

Jesus Over The Church
He is the Head of the Church (Colossians 1:18a)
He is the Creator of the Church (Colossians 1:18b)
He is the Authority over the Church (Colossians 1:18c)

Jesus On The Cross
The Plan He Laid—Reconciliation (Colossians 1:19-20a)
(from Enemy to Friend) (Ephesians 1:7) (Ephesians 1:5)
The Peace He Made—Restoration (Colossians 1:20b)
(from Object of Wrath to Object of Grace) (Romans 4:25) (1 John 4:10)
The Price He Paid—Redemption (Colossians 1:20c)
(from His Sacrifice to Our Deliverance) (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Conclusion: It is important that one sees Jesus as the Bible reveals Him—as One who has supremacy over the created, the church, and death. And not as many, who wish to see Him for their own conveniences. One’s eternity depends on it. (Acts 4:12)
