“The Way God Speaks”
Introduction: God’s Word (truth) is never discovered; it is revealed. The understanding of spiritual truth is the result of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. Therefore, understanding spiritual truth does not lead us to an encounter with God; it is the encounter with God.
God Speaks through His Word
By Revelation—God revealing Himself to creation
--general—through nature & conscience (Romans 1:18-22) (Psalm 19:1)
--specific—through prayer & God’s Word (Psalm 119)
By Interpretation—determining the meaning of God’s Word (1 Thessalonians 2:13)
By Illumination—the Holy Spirit’s work of bringing understanding
--“logos”—written word of God (2 Timothy 4:2)
--“rhema”—spoken word of God (Romans 10:17)
By Application—determining the relevance of God’s Word and then actively responding (James 1:21-27)
Foot Note: Questions Concerning Illumination & Application
Is there a truth we should believe about God?
Is there something we should trust God for?
Is there a command we need to obey?
Is there an attitude we need to change?
Is there a motive we need to change?
Is there a promise we can claim in our current situation?
Is there someone we need to pray for?
God Speaks through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:14-15—CSB)
By Indwelling Us (1 Corinthians 3:16)
By Comforting Us (John 14:26a)
By Teaching Us (John 14:26b)
By Convicting Us (John 16:8)
By Guiding Us (John 16:13)
By Glorifying Jesus through Us (John 16:14)
By Assuring Us (Romans 8:16)
By Giving Gifts to Us (1 Corinthians 12:11)
By Empowering Us (Acts 1:8)
Conclusion: God will never tell us something that does not align with His Word. When God speaks it is utmost importance that we listen and respond in obedience.
