EXPERIENCING GOD
“The Church Experiencing God” (Part 1)
Ephesians 4:11-16

Introduction: When a church allows God’s presence and activity to be expressed, a watching world will be drawn to Him. A church needs to hear the whole counsel of God through His Word, prayer, and circumstances. A church must learn to function as a body with Christ as the head if it expects to experience God.

The Tutors of the Church

“Apostles”—one who was visibly called, commissioned, and sent out and given authority and power by the Risen Lord (Acts 1:21-22, 1 Corinthians 9:1)

“Prophets”—one who has the ability under the inspiration of Holy Spirit to proclaim and possibly predict the actions of God (1 Corinthians 14:3)

“Evangelists”—one who has a special gifting to proclaim the gospel to the lost (2 Timothy 4:5)

“Pastors”—one who can minister in a local church through leading, challenging, restoring, encouraging & protecting (1 Peter 5:1-4)

“Teachers”—one who can comprehend and understand the Word of God and then can instruct, challenge, comfort, and warn from its truths (Matthew 28:19-20; 2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16)

The Task of the Church
“Equipping”—to provide what is needed to be complete (Ephesians 4:12a)
“Edifying”—to strengthen by instruction and encouragement (Ephesians 4:12b)

The Target of the Church
“Unity of the faith”oneness, moving in the same direction (Ephesians 4:13a)
“Knowledge of the Son of God”—accurate truth (Ephesians 4:13b)
“Perfect man”—maturing faith, not lacking (Ephesians 4:13c)
“To the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”complete, fully grown (Ephesians 4:13d)

“The Bible was not written to satisfy your curiosity
but to make you conform to Christ’s image.
Not to make you a smarter sinner,
but to make you like the Savior.
Not to fill your head
with a collection of biblical facts,
but to transform your life.”
--Howard Hendricks

The Testimony of the Church
Follows correct doctrine (Ephesians 4:14a)
Not easily & comfortably deceived (Ephesians 4:14b)
Confronts with truth (Ephesians 4:15a)

Expects individual responsibility:
--grows within the church (Ephesians 4:15b)
--connects within the church (Ephesians 4:16a)
--serves within the church (Ephesians 4:16b)

Application: Are connected to a church where you can grow and serve with other followers of Jesus, while experiencing God? Why do you think God has placed you into your present church body?
