EXPERIENCING GOD
“The Church Experiencing God” (Part 2)
Philippians 2:1-4

Introduction: “Every congregation (church body) should be a world missions strategy center.” (Exp God, p. 226) For this to be a reality, we as a church family must be in “koinonia”—which is experiencing the fullest possible partnership and fellowship with God and each other. This requires unity in the vision God has given us and what we believe about Him.

The Expectancy from Unity

(Philippians 2—The Message)
1-4 “If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ,
if His love has made any difference in your life,
if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you,
if you have a heart,
if you care— then do me a favor:
agree with each other,
love each other,
be deep-spirited friends.
Don’t push your way to the front;
don’t sweet-talk your way to the top.
Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead.
Don’t be obsessed
with getting your own advantage.
Forget yourselves long enough
to help others.”

Encouragement (Philippians 2:1a)

A Growth Environment: (Leadershift, by John Maxwell)1. Others are ahead of me
2. I am continually challenged
3. My focus is outward & forward
4. I am often outside of my comfort zone
5. Others around me are growing
6. Growth is modeled and expected

Love (Philippians 2:1b) (John 15:12)
Fellowship (Philippians 2:1c)

How To Have a Unifying Spirit?
1. Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart
2. Take action to change your attitude
(moving from being me-centered to God-centered and others-centered)
3. Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart
4. Follow Christ’s example
5. Find ways to serve others
6. Claim responsibilities, not rights
7. Don’t take yourself so seriously

Compassion (Philippians 2:1d) (1 Peter 3:8)

The Essence of Unity (Philippians 2:2a) (1 Corinthians 1:10) (Hebrews 12:1-3)

The Expression of Unity

“A kingdom perspective moves our eyes off of ourselves
to the greater work around God is doing.”
(Exp God, p. 247)

Corresponding Outlook (Philippians 2:2b)
--being one in spirit
--being one in purpose

Humility (Philippians 2:3)
--requires an honest evaluation
--requires courage

Consideration (Philippians 2:4) (Romans 12:10) (Romans 12:16) (Romans 12:18)

How To Have a Unifying Spirit?

  1. Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart
  2. Take action to change your attitude
Move from being me-centered to God-centered and others-centered
  3. Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart
  4. Follow Christ’s example
Strive for unity even if it means you have to sacrifice
  5. Find ways to serve others
  6. Claim responsibilities, not rights
  7. Don’t take yourself so seriously

Moving toward unity:
--Learn and know your purpose
--Grow towards your maximum potential
--Invest in the lives of others

Application: God give us a love for one another that supersedes anything that keeps us from accomplishing what You ask us to do for Your Kingdom. Help us to remain unified in Your truth and in Your vision for our church family. (1 John 1:7)
