Introduction:

Happy New Year! Forgiveness does not just happen. Forgiveness is a result of following God’s Word in a deliberate, intentional manner with determination and practice! We have to set our eyes on a perfect Savior rather than imperfect people! We are all flawed and yet forgiven! Jesus paid it all – the ultimate price to forgive us! (Ephesians 4:31-32) (Colossians 3:12-14) (Luke 23:34)

Roots of Unforgiveness

• Bitterness (Hebrews 12:15)
• Selfishness (Philippians 2:3-4)
• Low Self-Esteem
• Ignorance

Reactions Caused by Unforgiveness (Ephesians 4:31)

Results Of Unforgiveness

• We hurt Jesus and grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30)
• We damage ourselves and relationships (Hebrews 12:14-15

Why Should I Forgive

• God has Forgiven Me (Ephesians 4:32)
• God will Forgive Me (I John 1:9) (Matthew 6:14-15)

How Do I Forgive?

• Believe God’s Word and Listen to the Spirit (Ephesians 4:26) (Psalm 103:10-12)
• When Forgiving Others:
  • REPENT
  • RECOGNIZE (Romans 5:3-4)
  • REFOCUS
  • RELEASE
  • RECONCILE (Matthew 5:24)
  • RELY (Philippians 4:13-14)

Application: “Never will we be more like Christ than when we choose to forgive.” Who should I forgive? And who do I need to ask for forgiveness?
