“Legalism”
Colossians 2:20-23
Series Introduction: The best way not to be taken in by that, which is false, is to know (from facts to experience) that which is true. The false teachers in the first century taught about a four-headed monster that consisted of intellectualism, ritualism, mysticism, and legalism.
Introduction: Being a true follower of Jesus is not just simply keeping a list of dos and don’ts—which is the attempt of legalism. Legalism says, Jesus is not enough; one also needs a series of rules, regulations, and guidelines to achieve God’s desires. Legalism turns the life of a follower of Jesus, into a life of bondage, instead of a joyful blessing.
Legalism—Direction is “Outside In”
Legalism Puts The Focus On:
The Negative Rather Than the Positive (Colossians 2:21)
The Passing Rather Than the Lasting (Colossians 2:22)
The Prideful Rather Than the Humble (Colossians 2:23a)
The Flesh Rather Than the Spirit (2:23b)
Transformation—Direction is “Inside Out” (Colossians 2:20)
Transformation Made Possible by Jesus Through the Holy Spirit:
Corrects One’s Direction from Legalism to Transformation (Romans 12:1-2)
Changes One’s Maturation from the Law to the Holy Spirit (Romans 7:6) (Galatians 5:18)
Shifts One’s Reality from Death to Life (Romans 6:5-11)
Provides Paul’s Testimony from Duty to Devotion (Acts 9)
--his new reputation (Acts 9:7-16)
--his new family (Acts 9:17a, 19)
--his new filling (Acts 9:17b)
--his new perspective (Acts 9:18a)
--his new obedience (Acts 9:18b)
--his new message (Acts 9:20)
--his new testimony (Acts 9:21)
--his new passion (Acts 9:22)
Application: As it relates to your growth as a follower of Jesus which direction are you moving: from the “outside in” or from the “inside out?” “Outside in” produces pride, while “inside out” produces transformation—true life-change.
Conclusion: God desires a personal relationship with you through His Son, Jesus, and not shallow, deceptive religious activity nor the false beliefs of this world found in, intellectualism, ritualism, mysticism, or legalism.
