Message

REVIVING THE WOUNDED HEART
“The People Who Hurt”
Genesis 37:1-36

Introduction: Hurt is hurt; but its impact and depth are determined by the closeness of the relationship with the offender.

Definition: Hurt is an offense taken as a perceived injustice by the attitude or actions of those, a person holds in high regard.

Types of People In Our Lives

Scenery People—those who are just there
Service People—those who serve us or we serve
Special People—those we are bonded with and care for
--Confiding Friends
--Close Family
--Church Fellowship (Luke 4:18)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He has appointed Me
to preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed”
   (Luke 4:18)

Types of Pain In Our Lives (Genesis 37)

Wounds of Unmet Needs (Genesis 37:1-4)
--a place to belong
--a sense of purpose
Wounds of Unmet Expectations (Genesis 37:5-11)
Wounds of Ungratefulness (Genesis 37:12-17)
Wounds of Words, Reactions and/or Actions (Genesis 37:18-27)
Wounds of Grief (ending of a relationship) (Genesis 37:28-36)

Application: The path to heal a wounded heart:

Who has hurt you?
   Identify the person

How does it make you feel?
   Identify the pain

What is your natural inclination?
   Identify the lie

What does God’s Word say?
   Identify with the truth

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He has appointed Me
to preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed”
   (Luke 4:18)
