REVIVING THE WOUNDED HEART
“The Peril of Hostility”
“Enter by the narrow gate;
for wide is the gate
and broad (easy) is the way
that leads to destruction,
and there are many
who go in by it. (take that path)
Because narrow is the gate
and difficult is the way
which leads to life,
and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
The Effects of Hostility Towards Others
Emotionally—calloused, isolated, angered
--anger can explode (Ephesians 4:26a)
--anger can implode (Ephesians 4:26b)
Spiritually—impeded, encumbered, unfruitful
--gives the enemy a stronghold in your life (Ephesians 4:27)
--extensive deterrent to your spiritual growth (Ephesians 4:30)
Mentally—bitter, vengeful, resentful (Ephesians 4:31)
The Path of Bitterness:
--the bruised—not addressing the hurt
--the blind—not realizing the damage of the hurt
--the bound—not understanding the bondage of the hurt
--the broken—shattered by the hurt BUT GOD
Relationally—unkind, unsympathetic, unforgiving
“And be kind (provide what is needed in the relationship)
to one another,
tenderhearted, (compassionate)
forgiving one another,
even as God in Christ forgave you.”
(Ephesians 4:32)
Physically—stressed, diseased, exhausted
(Psalm 38:3-5) (Acts 3:19)
How is the hurt you are carrying affecting you?
What is the hurt you are carrying costing you?
REVIVING THE WOUNDED HEART
“The Path of Healing”
Matthew 18:21-35; Selected Passages
Introduction: Reasons you do not forgive: the one who hurt you does not deserve forgiveness; the one who hurt you has not suffered enough; and lastly, to forgive them will make you feel vulnerable.
Forgiveness Is Not:
Minimizing the woundedness of your hurt
Forgetting the hurt caused by your offender
Resuming a relationship with your offender w/o changes (Romans 12:18)
Forgiveness Is:
Realizing it is supernatural; not natural (Matthew 18:21)
Repeating the process as long as necessary (Matthew 18:22)
(process not an act)
Reckoning forgiveness is a virtue of the Kingdom of God (Matthew 18:23-27)
Relinquishing the right to get even (Matthew 18:28) (Romans 12:19)
Responding to evil with good (Matthew 18:29-30)
“But I say to you who hear:
love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you,
and pray for those who spitefully use you.” (Luke 6:27-28)
Remembering you have been forgiven (Matthew 18:31-32)
“Bearing with one another,
and forgiving one another,
if anyone has a complaint against another;
even as Christ forgave you,
so you also must do.”
(Colossians 3:13)
Realizing it is a command; not a suggestion (Matthew 18:33-35)
Application: To reject the anger you feel toward someone; to rid yourself from the bondage of bitterness; and to forgive unconditionally you must:
--acknowledge the hurt you have towards God for allowing the hurt into your life
--acknowledge that your anger, bitterness, and unforgiving spirit are wrong and confess it as sin
--realize that the charges you have against the person who hurt you must be dropped
--realize all judgments against the person who hurt you must be canceled
Conclusion: How will you know you have truly forgiven your offender?
--anger will turn to a gentle spirit
--bitterness will turn to a grateful heart
--an unforgiving spirit will turn to compassion
which will bring freedom from bondage & peace from hostility
