Message

REVIVING THE WOUNDED HEART
“The Paradox of Hurt”
Genesis 37-50

Introduction: What if you were told that the hurt you have experienced in your life, could possibly be the best thing to ever have happened to you and those around you. It is true and can be proven with the story of Joseph (OT) in the Bible.

“We never truly learn anything new
about God and ourselves|
except through hurt or adversity.”
--
Watchman Nee

What are the Breakthroughs to Forgiveness?

Discerning what character qualities God wants to develop in you through the offense (Genesis 37:1-11)

Realizing that God is working in you through the actions of your offender
--the unknown plan (Genesis 37:18-28) (Psalm 105:16-22)
--the known plan (Genesis 45:4-8)

Expecting to suffer for doing right as a normal part of living for God (Genesis 39:1-20)

Surrendering yourself to God’s plan that He may bring
--vindication (justice) (Genesis 41:37-44)
--regeneration (healing) (Genesis 41:50-52)
--restoration (repair) (Genesis 45:9-11)

Thanking God for the ministry platform He gives through the offense (Genesis 50:15-21)
--brings the wounds and needs of the offender in focus
--allows God to use you (the offended) in the offender's life (Romans 8:28)

What are the Benefits of Forgiveness?

Identify with Jesus  (the story of Joseph)

Proper Perspective
--through the lens of grace
--through the lens of God’s sovereignty (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)

Good Health (Proverbs 3:5-8)

Personal Peace (Philippians 4:6-7)

Abundant Life (John 10:10)

Application: Is there anyone in your life who has hurt you that you have not forgiven? Is unforgiveness worth the consequences?  Is forgiveness worth the benefits?

PATH TO TRANSFORMATION
FROM HURT TO FORGIVENESS

Who has hurt you?  --identify the person(s):

How does it make you feel?  --identify the pain:

What is your natural inclination?  --identify the lies:

What does God’s Word say?  --identify the truth:

Exchange: the lie for truth; the darkness for light; the disease for healing; the feeling for faith; the bondage for freedom

Memory Verses:

“Bearing with one another,
and forgiving one another,
if anyone has a complaint against another;
even as Christ forgave you,
so you also must do.” (Colossians 3:13)

“For the weapons of our warfare
are not carnal (from within ourselves)
but mighty (powerful) in God (from the Holy Spirit)
for pulling down strongholds, (fortresses/ imprisonments)
casting down arguments (rationalizations)
and every high thing (idols—belief system against God’s truth)
that exalts itself against (takes precedence over)
the knowledge of God,
bringing every thought (that is against God’s truth)
into captivity (capture it and bring under submission)
to the obedience of Christ
(His provision and protection for you).
(2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

And we know that all things work together
for good to those who love God,
to those who are the called
according to His purpose.”  (Romans 8:28)

Prayer: “God, I am asking you today to help me, turn my hurt to hope, knowing that you can turn those things that have caused me pain into something for Your purpose and glory.”

Sign:__________________  Date:_______________

Conclusion:

How will you know you have truly forgiven your offender?

--anger will turn to a gentle spirit
--bitterness will turn to a grateful heart
--an unforgiving spirit will turn to compassion

which will bring freedom from bondage & peace from hostility
