RESPECTABLE SINS
Selfishness - “It’s all about Me”
Selected Passages
Series Introduction: We all have blind spots, character flaws, or certain “Respectable Sins” that seem to go unnoticed in our lives. Often, these “subtle sins” are never dealt with. We can become so preoccupied with the major sins of society that we can lose sight of the need to deal with our own more subtle sins. (Isaiah 59:2) (1 John 2:15-16) (Proverbs 3:5-6)
When it comes to selfishness God’s Word commands us to:
Die to Self (John 12:23,25) (2 Corinthians 5:14-15) (John 8:34)
Cultivate a Heart of Giving (1 John 3:17) (Proverbs 14:12)
Cultivate a Heart for Others (Mark 10:43b-44) (2 Timothy 3:1-5)
Cultivate a Heart of Consideration (Philippians 2:3-4) (1 Corinthians 1:10)
How Can We Change? How Can We Let Go of Selfishness??
- Admit in humility that selfishness is sin. (Galatians 2:20)
- Live by faith in God, not in the interests of yourself.
- Turn my life from serving self to serving others.
- Seek restoration
- Recognize God’s Word as energy when I fail, and recognize the power in prayer.
Application: Selfishness is accepted in our world today, but it is the opposite of what God has planned for our lives. May we never see selfishness as an acceptable sin in our lives, but rather as a sin that is unacceptable to God. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
