RESPECTABLE SINS
Profanity – Loose Lips Sink Ships
Ephesians 4:25-32

Series Introduction:  We all have blind spots, character flaws, or certain “Respectable Sins” that seem to go unnoticed in our lives.  Often, these “subtle sins” are never dealt with.  We can become so preoccupied with the major sins of society that we can lose sight of the need to deal with our own more subtle sins. (Ephesians 4:29)

Destructive Speech

Lying (Proverbs 6:16-19)
(Colossians 3:9-10) (John 8:31-32)

Gossip
(Proverbs 18:7-8, 11:13, 17:9)

Gossip builds walls
between people.

Gossip betrays a confidence.”

Harsh Words (Proverbs 15:1-2)

Harsh words can be in our tone, in our body language, in our looks.

Talking Too Much (Proverbs 10:19

Talking Too Soon (Proverbs 18:13)

Constructive Speech

Speaking Truth
(Proverbs 24:26)

Gracious Words

Take a Breath and Ask:
- Do I have the facts right?
- Should love hide this?(I Peter 4:8)
- Am I listening to the Holy Spirit?
     (Ephesians 4:30)
- Is my attitude right?
- Are my words loving?
    (Ephesians 4:15)

Put On Kindness
   (Ephesians 4:29-32)

Discern What’s Worth Saying (Psalm 141:3) (Proverbs 15:23)

Humbly Listen (James 1:19) (Proverbs 15:28) (Ephesians 4:29)

Application: Speak positively and make opportunities for our speech to encourage, motivate, give hope, provide guidance, and make people smile.  Demonstrate humility and gentleness. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your speech. (Psalm 19:14)
