SURVIVE AND THRIVE
“Peter’s Progression”
1 Peter 1:1a
Introduction: Peter, the author of 1st Peter, is one of the most complex characters in the Bible. He is a great example of what it means to “survive and thrive” in Christ.
Peter’s Life Before Christ
His Place
--he was originally from Bethsaida (John 1:44)
--he moved to Capernaum (Mark 1:21-31)
His People
--he was Jewish
--he was the Son of Jonah (John 21:15a)
--he was married (Mark 1:30)
--he had a brother named Andrew (John 1:40)
His Profession
--he was a fisherman (Luke 5:1-6)
--he had partners—James & John (Luke 5:7-11) (Mark 1:20)
His Personality
--a passionate person—quick to speak (John 13:1-9)
--a take-change person—quick to act (Matthew 17:1-9; 26:47-54)
--a moldable person—quick to change (Book of Acts)
Peter’s Life After Christ
His Proper Names
--Simon (means pebble) (3 lists-Gospels)
--Peter (means stone) (Matthew 16:17-18)
His Prominence
--he tops all the list of disciples (Matthew 10:2-4; Mark 3:16-19; Luke 6:14-16; Acts 1:13)
--he was written about the most (Gospels, Acts)
--he was a leader (John 21:3) (Acts 2:14)
His Pardon
--the means of his conversion (John 1:40-42)
--his call (Matthew 4:18-20)
--his confession (Luke 5:8) (Matthew 16:13-16)
Peter’s Life After Pentecost
His Stories (Book of Acts)
His Summons (Acts 1:13-26)
His Sermon (Acts 2:14-39)
His Suffering
--arrested (Acts 4:1-3; Acts 12:1-23)
--persecuted (Acts 4:13-20; Acts 5:17-32)
--executed (Acts of Peter-around 150AD)
His Scriptures (1 Peter, 2 Peter, Gospel of Mark?)
Application: The account of Peter’s life in the Scriptures gives the reader one of the clearest pictures of a transformed life that survives and thrives. Does your life reflect, what it means to survive and thrive?
“You younger men, follow the leadership of those who are older. And all of you serve each other with humble spirits, for God gives special blessings to those who are humble but sets himself against those who are proud.
If you will humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, in his good time he will lift you up. Let him have all your worries and cares, for he is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you.
Be careful—watch out for attacks from Satan, your great enemy. He prowls around like a hungry, roaring lion, looking for some victim to tear apart. Stand firm when he attacks.
Trust the Lord; and remember that other Christians all around the world are going through these sufferings too. After you have suffered a little while, our God, who is full of kindness through Christ, will give you his eternal glory.
He personally will come and pick you up, and set you firmly in place, and make you stronger than ever.”
(1 Peter 5:5-11--TLB)
