SURVIVE AND THRIVE
“Living Beyond Reality” Part 2
1 Peter 1:13-21

Introduction: The purpose of 1st Peter is to encourage followers of Jesus that they can survive and thrive even in suffering.

“After you have suffered a little while,
our God, who is full of kindness through Christ,
will give you His eternal glory.

He personally will come and pick you up,
and set you firmly in place,
and make you stronger than ever.”
(1 Peter 5:10—TLB)

Living Beyond the Sufferings of our Present Reality Means:

Living a Life of Hope

William Barclay wrote,

“The Christian hope is the hope
which has seen everything
and endured everything,
and has still not despaired,
because it believes in God.

The Christian hope is not hope
in the human spirit, in human goodness,
in human endurance, in human achievement;
the Christian hope is hope in the power of God.”

A New Focus—Outlook
--by way of thoughts—resolute (1 Peter 11:13a)
--by way of actions—steady (1 Peter 11:13b)
--by way of expectations—rest (1 Peter 11:13c) (Matthew 11:28)

A New Future—Uplook (1 Peter 11:13d)

Living a Life of Holiness

Set Apart from Evil Desires (1 Peter 11:14)

Set Apart for God
--by way of your conduct (1 Peter 11:15)
--by way of His nature (1 Peter 11:16)

Living a Life of Reverent Fear (Psalm 111:10)

God’s Corrective Plan (1 Peter 11:17)

God’s Redemptive Plan
--not by way of man’s tradition (1 Peter 11:18)
--but by way of God’s perfection
--flawless sacrifice (1 Peter 11:19) (2 Corinthians 5:21)
--foreknown plan (1 Peter 11:20)
--fashioned faith & hope (1 Peter 11:21)

Application: Do you live your life as Peter describes it here in this passage--not focused on the emptiness and trials of this life but on the reality of eternity that can only be realized when we live a life of hope and holiness, in the context of honoring God through our lives?
