SURVIVE AND THRIVE
“A Follower’s Relationships”
1 Peter 3:1-7
Introduction: Right in the middle of Peter’s letter he addresses the important issue of marriage. It is interesting to note that most all ancient writings do not address how husbands and wives are to interact nor what the relationship should look like. Yet God esteems marriage as the highest of all human relationships. In this letter Peter addresses the wives (1 Peter 3:1-6) and then the husbands (1 Peter 3:7).
A Word To Wives Concerning Husbands:
Be Submissive (1 Peter 3:1a)
Submission is not:
--agreeing with everything your husband says
--leaving your brain or your will at the wedding altar
--believing a wife is inferior or unequal
--putting the will of your husband before the will of Christ
--acting out of fear toward your husband (Galatians 3:28)
Submission is:
--affirming your husband’s calling of leadership
--placing yourself under your husband’s leadership
--allowing your husband to lead (Ephesians 5:22-25)
Be Respectful
To Meet His Greatest Spiritual Need—salvation (1 Peter 3:1b-2a)
To Meet His Greatest Emotional Need—respect (1 Peter 3:2b) (Ephesians 5:33)
Be Beautiful
Outer Beauty—Secondary (1 Peter 3:3) (Proverbs 31:30)
Inner Beauty—Primary (1 Peter 3:4)
--“incorruptible”—lasting & pure
--“gentle spirit”—meek & humble
--“quiet spirit”—tranquil & patient
Be Observant
In the Scriptures (1 Peter 3:5-6a) (Proverbs 31:25-31) (Hebrews 11:11)
In Life
--identifying & modeling godly examples (1 Peter 3:6b) (Titus 2:1-4)
--identifying & overcoming insecurities (3:6c)
A Word To Husbands Concerning Wives:
“The Bible calls men to be something radically different
than what we find in our society today.
A man is to be tough for his family
to provide for and protect them.
A man is to be tender with his family
to love and serve them.
Any man who is only tough
will abuse his family.
Any man who is only tender
will allow others to abuse his family.”
Be Intimate (1 Peter 3:7a—“dwell with them”) (Genesis 2:24)
Be Considerate (1 Peter 3:7b—“with understanding”)
Be Appreciative (1 Peter 3:7c—“giving honor”)
Be Sensitive & Strong (1 Peter 3:7d—“as to the weaker vessel”)
Be Cooperative (1 Peter 3:7e—“heirs together”)
Be Aware (1 Peter 3:7f—“that your prayers may not be hindered”)
Application: For the above realities to be true in our marriages; selflessness is required. We must seek to put the needs of our spouses above our own.
