Message

MOMENTUM
Releasing Tradition & Embracing Transformation”
Philippians 3:4-13

Definition of Spiritual Momentum: A move of the Holy Spirit in the life of a church family that is awakening to, rallying around, and fulfilling the vision of the Great Commission.

Introduction: Under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, our methods, creativity, and presentation of the Gospel require us at times to reach beyond our traditions for the greater cause of lives being transformed by a never changing message.

Paul’s Journey From Tradition to Transformation: (Philippians 3)

His Limited Traditional Past

His Worthless Testimony
--a by-product of the flesh (Philippians 3:4)
--a by-product of religion (Philippians 3:5-6)

His Profound Realization
--a profitable evaluation (Philippians 3:7-8a)
--a profound endeavor (Philippians 3:8b)

Footnote: Why Continue in Tradition?
   Worthwhile
   Nostalgia
   Safe
   Laziness
   Lack of Creativity
   Fear of Change

His Unlimited Transformative Future

His Worthy Testimony
--a new infatuation (Philippians 3:9) (2 Corinthians 5:21)  (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
--a new intimacy (Philippians 3:10a)
--a new identity (Philippians 3:10b-11)

His Productive Ministry
--a new maturation (Philippians 3:12-13a)  (Romans 12:2) (Hebrews 12:1-2)
--a new meditation (Philippians 3:13b)
--a new motivation (Philippians 3:14)

Application: An attempt to move from tradition to the greater emphasis of transformation requires careful evaluation.

Evaluation 1:  Evidence of Debilitating & Deceitful Tradition
The Test:  Preference vs. Principle (Romans 14:1-13) (1 Corinthians 9:19-23)

Evaluation 2: Evidence of Undeniable & Unimpaired Transformation
The Test:  Religion vs. Relationship (Paul’s Story--Acts 22:1-21; David’s Story--1 Samuel 4-6, 2 Samuel 6)

Conclusion: To be all God has called us to be, as a Church Family, we must create a culture that is not bound by the limitations of tradition. We must not be satisfied until transformation in the lives of individuals becomes the theme, motivation and goal of our overall ministry.
