...Immanuel (God With Us) - Joseph’s Story
Matthew 1:18-25, 2:13-16; Luke 2:1-7, 22-24, 33-35

Introduction: For many the Christmas Season is the loneliest time of the year. Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. It is more than the feeling of wanting the company of others. It is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from others.

The Loneliness of Betrayal (Matthew 1)
The Hurt (Matthew 1:18)
The Loss (Matthew 1:19)
The Hope (Matthew 1:20-23)
The Obedience (Matthew 1:24-25)

The Loneliness of Being Overwhelmed (Luke 2)
The Pressures of Frustration (Luke 2:1-5)
The Pressures of Family (Luke 2:6-7)
The Pressures of Finances (Luke 2:22-24)
The Pressures of the Future (Luke 2:33-35)

The Loneliness of Opposition (Matthew 2)
The Flight (Matthew 2:13-14)
The Fulfillment (Matthew 2:15)
The Fugitives (Matthew 2:16)

Conclusion: In the middle of Joseph’s story of loneliness, God reveals that His Son’s name shall be Immanuel meaning God with us. We must also remember that God is with us even in our desperate cries of loneliness.

Application: How has loneliness visited your life? How do you respond to your loneliness? For our benefit Jesus experienced the worst kind of loneliness ever known while on the cross.
