Joseph's Dysfunctional Family
Genesis 37:1-35
Introduction: Like many, Joseph had to overcome the reality of a dysfunctional family. Dysfunction in a home is a consequence of a practice or behavioral pattern that undermines the stability of an individual or family. Just as Joseph, one can overcome the effects of a dysfunctional home by realizing and then changing the destructive patterns that create the dysfunction.
A Dormant (Passive) Father—Jacob
He Showed Indiscretion—did not keep God’s law concerning marriage and introduced aggravating factors to his family (Genesis 37:1-2)
He Showed Favoritism—did not consider what this may lead to for his family and Joseph (Genesis 37:3)
He Showed Disinterest—did not have a clue as to what was going on in his family (Genesis 37:4) (Ephesians 6:4)
He Showed Preference—did not use wisdom at all by having the oldest accountable to the youngest (Genesis 37:12-14)
Bottom Line: If the enemy wants to destroy a family he will go after the husband/father. He knows in most cases that if he can destroy the strong godly influence of the husband/father he can wreak havoc on a family.
A Dreamy (Undiscerning) Son—Joseph
He was Inattentive—did not realize the troubled situation in his family (Genesis 37:4-5)
He was Insensitive—did not consider the impact of his actions and words on his family (Genesis 37:6-8)
He was Immature—did not stop to think about how this information may affect his family (Genesis 37:9-11)
A Dysfunctional Family—The Brothers
They were Resentful—did not know how to deal with their hurt and jealousy (Genesis 37:15-30)
They were Deceitful—did not break the generational sin of their father (Genesis 37:31-35)
Application: Dysfunction in a family has the potential to breed even more dysfunction in the next generation if not intentionally dealt with. Jacob was a passive father who allowed his sins to haunt and become manifest in the lives of his children. What steps are you taking to ensure that you do not pass your dysfunction to the lives of your children and grandchildren?
Conclusion: To Overcome Dysfunction, You Must:
Discover the Purposes for which Jesus Came (Luke 4:18)
Be Resilient in Determining to be a Generation Breaker (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Rely on the Holy Spirit to Reveal your Dysfunction (John 16:13)
Believe God’s Word to Defeat Your Dysfunction (Hebrews 4:12)
Turn to Others to Aid in your Healing (1 John 1:7a)
