RESILIENT
Joseph’s Victory Over Temptation
Genesis 39:1-23

Introduction: Doing the right thing does not necessarily guarantee good short-term outcomes. This principle is clearly seen in this part of Joseph’s life. However, Joseph stood firm, overcame temptation and trusted that God was providentially directing his life through his trials.

The Testimony Joseph Exhibited
He Had a Personal Testimony (Genesis 39:1-2)
He Had a Powerful Testimony (Genesis 39:3)
He Had a Prosperous Testimony (Genesis 39:4-6)

The Temptation Joseph Endured

The Capability of the Temptation
--subtle (Genesis 39:7a)
--shocking (Genesis 39:7b)
--sustained (Genesis 39:10)
--strategic (Genesis 39:11-16)

The Character of the Tempted
--right concerns (Genesis 39:8-9)
--right strategy (Genesis 39:10-12)

Side Note:

When Temptation Comes:
--don’t be weakened by the situation
--don’t be deceived by the persuasion
--don’t be gentle with emotions
--don’t be confused with the immediate results

God’s Word Concerning Temptation:
Temptation is never from God (James 1:13)
Temptation is always from within (James 1:14-15)
Temptation must be handled properly (1 Corinthians 10:13)
--deal with it immediately
--deal with it realistically
--deal with it ruthlessly
--deal with it proactively

The Trial Joseph Encountered
The Wife’s Unfounded Accusation (Genesis 39:17-18)
The Master’s Unmerited Anger (Genesis 39:19-20)

The Triumph Joseph Experienced
The Prison was a place of Opportunity (Genesis 39:21) (Romans 8:28)
The Prison was a Place of Obedience (Genesis 39:22)
The Prison was a Place of Overcoming (Genesis 39:23)

Application: No matter how alluring or pleasurable or momentarily delightful the bait looks, don’t linger in temptation. Claim the supernatural strength that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ to resist temptation and you can live a life God can bless.
