Joseph’s Forged Heart—Part 2
Matthew 18:21-35; Ephesians 4:26-27, 30-32; Other Passages
Introduction: Reasons you do not forgive: the one who hurt you does not deserve forgiveness; the one who hurt you has not suffered enough; and lastly, to forgive them will make you feel vulnerable.
Forgiveness Is Not:
Minimizing the woundedness of your hurt
Forgetting the hurt caused by your offender
Resuming a relationship with your offender w/o changes (Romans 12:18)
Forgiveness Is: (Matthew 18)
Realizing it is supernatural; not natural (Matthew 18:21)
Repeating the process as long as necessary (Matthew 18:22)
Reckoning that forgiveness is God’s best way (Matthew 18:23-27) (Proverbs 14:12) (Matthew 7:13-14)
Relinquishing the right to get even (Matthew 18:28) (Romans 12:19)
Responding to evil with good (Matthew 18:29-30) (Luke 6:27-28)
Remembering you have been forgiven (Matthew 18:31-32) (Colossians 3:13)
Realizing it is a command; not a suggestion (Matthew 18:33-35)
The Realms of Unforgiveness
The Bruised—not addressing the hurt
The Blind—not realizing the damage of the hurt
The Bound—not understanding the bondage of the hurt
The Broken—shattered by the hurt BUT GOD
The Effects of Unforgiveness (Ephesians 4) (Philippians 4:4-7)
Emotionally—calloused, isolated, angered
--anger can explode (Ephesians 4:26a)
--anger can implode (Ephesians 4:26b)
Spiritually—impeded, encumbered, unfruitful
--gives the enemy a stronghold in your life (Ephesians 4:27)
“For the weapons of our warfare
are not carnal (from within ourselves)
but mighty (powerful) in God (from the Holy Spirit)
for pulling down strongholds, (fortresses/ imprisonments)
casting down arguments (rationalizations)
and every high thing (idols—belief system against God’s truth)
that exalts itself against (takes precedence over)
the knowledge of God,
bringing every thought (that is against God’s truth)
into captivity (capture it and bring under submission)
to the obedience of Christ
(His provision and protection for you).” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)
--extensive deterrent to your spiritual growth (Ephesians 4:30)
Mentally—bitter, vengeful, resentful (Ephesians 4:31) (Hebrews 12:14-15)
Relationally—unkind, unsympathetic, unforgiving (Ephesians 4:32)
Physically—stressed, diseased, exhausted (Psalm 38:3-5) (Acts 3:19)
Application: To reject the anger, you feel towards someone; to rid yourself from the bondage of bitterness; and to forgive unconditionally you must:
--acknowledge the hurt you have towards God for allowing it
--recognize that your bitterness and unforgiving spirit is wrong
--realize that the charges you have against them must be dropped
--understand that all your judgments against them must be canceled
