FROM DEATH TO LIFE
“You Were...But God”
Ephesians 2:1-10

Introduction: The new spiritual realities that have been provided for you (1:3-14) can only be realized when you discover the true crisis of your soul and then receive the cure provided by Christ. In the passage today Paul is describing the act and process of salvation or as he puts it being “in Christ.”

Your Predicament—Your Crisis

• You were spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1)
  - “trespasses”—means to fall, stumble, or go in wrong direction
  - “sins”—to miss the mark, falling short of what is required (Romans 6:23a) (Colossians 2:13-14)
•  You were following
  --the world (Ephesians 2:2a) (Romans 12:2a)
  --the enemy (Ephesians 2:2b) (Ephesians 6:12)
  --the flesh (Ephesians 2:3a) (Romans 8:5-8)
• You were children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3b) (Romans 5:9)

God’s Panacea—His Cure All

• He is merciful (Ephesians 2:4a) (Psalm 103:8)
  Grace is receiving what we don’t deserve—His Love
  Mercy is not receiving what we deserve—His Wrath
• He is loving (Ephesians 2:4b) (Romans 5:6-8)
• He is sacrificial (Ephesians 2:5) (Romans 5:9-10)
• He is deliverer (Ephesians 2:6)
  --present reality—live above this current reality (Galatians 2:20)
  --future reality—live beyond this current reality (Romans 7:24-25a) (Colossians 3:4)

God’s Purpose—His Causes

• To display His grace (Ephesians 2:7a) (Ephesians 1:7)
  --opposite of works
• To display His kindness (Ephesians 2:7b) (Titus 3:3-5)
  --opposite of wrath

Your Propensity—Your Carnality

• To earn what is freely given (Ephesians 2:8)
• To exhibit what is fraudulent glory (Ephesians 2:9) (Galatians 6:3)

God’s Predetermination—His Confirmation

• You are to receive what He offers by faith (Ephesians 2:8b) (John 3:16)
• You are to perceive what He ordains by faith
  --His achievement—you are a work of art in Christ (Ephesians 2:10a) (Philippians 1:6)
  --His accomplishment—you are expected to do good works through Christ (Ephesians 2:10b) (Matthew 5:16)

Application: Does your life reveal and reflect that you are God’s masterpiece—showing off His work of salvation in and through you?

This is a mission trip right in our own backyard! We will have the opportunity to serve
our area, hangout with friends, and make a difference here in our community.
