FROM DEATH TO LIFE
“A Paramount Prayer”
Ephesians 3:14-21
Introduction: Paul concludes the theological chapters of Ephesians (1-3) with a prayer for us who are “in Christ”—that we would fully understand who we are “in Christ.”
The Harmonious Reasons for Paul’s Prayer (Ephesians 3:14-15)
Possible Identities As Relating To God:
1) Shame-based Identity
“I am hopeless and cannot be accepted by God.”
2) Performance-based Identity
“I must do certain things for God to approve of me and keep approving of me.”
3) Christ-based Identity
“If I have a Christ-based identity there is nothing I have done in the past that could keep God from accepting me for I am in Him and there is nothing I can do on my own to get God to approve of me for I am in Him.”
In Christ We Are All Included In:
- God’s Blessings (Ephesians 1:1-23)
- God’s Grace (Ephesians 2:1-10)
- God’s Family (2:11-3:13)
The Heavenly Requests of Paul’s Prayer (Ephesians 3:16)
- We Often Pray for the Outer Person and the Physical
Pain-avoidance—“Lord, this hurts. Make it stop.”
Change of circumstances—“Lord, I don’t like this. Change it, please.”
- Paul Often Prayed for the Inner Person and the Spiritual
Plan-accepted—“Lord, this hurts. Give me strength.”
Change of character—“Lord, I don’t like this. Change me, please.”
The Hopeful Results of Paul’s Prayer
- A Greater Reality (Ephesians 3:17a)
- A Greater Love
Experienced through faith (Ephesians 3:17b)
Examined with the saints (Ephesians 3:18)
Exhibited through the cross (Ephesians 3:19a) - A Greater Filling (Ephesians 3:19b)
- A Greater Power (Ephesians 3:20)
- A Greater Praise (Ephesians 3:21)
Application: Are you living in the reality of this prayer? Do your prayers reflect the prayers mentioned throughout the God’s Word? (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)
