Message

FROM DEATH TO LIFE
Unity In Him For Him”
Ephesians 4:1-6

The Layout of Ephesians:

Chapters 1-3:            Chapters 4-6:
In Christ                    For Christ
Spiritual Wealth      Spiritual Walk
Our Position            Our Practice
Doctrinal                  Practical
Revelation               Responsibility
Belief                        Behavior
Heavenly Standing        Earthly Walk
How God Sees Us In Christ     How the World Should See Us For Christ

Introduction: The “calling” represents when we trusted Jesus as Savior and Lord. We received by faith through repentance what Jesus provided through the cross. At that time, we are placed “in Christ” with others who have done the same. From this point we then begin to live together (in unity) the life He intends for us to live—not only in Him but also for Him.

The Excellence of the Call

  • The Challenger—“the prisoner of the Lord” (Ephesians 4:1a)
  • The Challenge—“walk worthy” (Ephesians 4:1b)
“walk” refers to daily living or lifestyle
      “worthy” means commendable excellence

The real challenge in life is living up to the position or calling of being a child of God and a fellow heir of Christ.

The Etiquette of the Call

  • Humility—courteously respectful, not arrogant, to lower in status (Ephesians 4:2a)
  • Meekness—gentle, submissive, tame, not harsh, power under control (Ephesians 4:2b)
  • Patience—enduring and understanding while under trying circumstances (Ephesians :2c)
  • Forbearance—self-control when annoyed (4:2d)

“Christians are people who are drawn together because they owe a common debt to the goodness and grace of God.”  --William Barclay

The Expectation of the Call—“unity” (Ephesians 4:3)

  • Picture of Disunity—discord, dissension, disharmony, disconnection, competition, conflict, tension, hostility
  • Picture of Unity
“endeavoring to keep”—working to do one’s best, to be diligent & intentional, not putting off
“of the Spirit”—(Holy Spirit) working toward His purposes
“bond of peace”—joined together (oneness) by peace, despite our differences (being weaved together) (Romans 5:1) (Philippians 4:7) (Hebrews 12:14a)

Unity is not something we create; it is something that we preserve.  Without unity the focus to reach those in need of salvation is lost.

The Expression of the Call (Ephesians 4:4-6)

  • “one body”—we are a family unified for one purpose
  • “one Spirit”—we are all indwelt by the same Spirit
  • “one hope”—we all look forward to the same future
  • “one Lord”—we all submit to the same Person
  • “one faith”—we all trust Jesus for salvation
  • “one baptism”—we all have a single identity
  • “one God and Father”—we all share the same Father (John 17:20-22)

Application: We are called into the unity of the Church by way of salvation. Then once there, we are called to keep the unity to make Him known to all.
