FROM DEATH TO LIFE
“Unity In The Gifting”
Ephesians 4:7-16
Introduction: Paul is exhorting us to unity that we may fulfill the calling of our life to minister to others and reach the lost with the gospel with our gifts through the local Church.
The Amplitude of the Gifts
- Manifested by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)
- Measured by Grace (Ephesians 4:7a)
- Motivated by Christ (Ephesians 4:7b)
The Appraisal of the Gifts
- The Great Cost: His Descent
—death & hell (Ephesians 4:8-9) - The Great Value: His Assent
—dominion & heaven (Ephesians 4:10)
The Assortment of the Gifts (Ephesians 4:11)
- “apostles”
One who was visibly called, commissioned and sent out and given authority and power by the Risen Lord (Acts 1:21-22, 1 Corinthians 9:1) - “prophets”
One who has the ability under the inspiration of Holy Spirit to proclaim and possibly predict the actions of God (1 Corinthians 14:3) - “evangelists”
One who has a special gifting to proclaim the gospel to the lost (2 Timothy 4:5) - “pastors”
One who has the ability to minister in a local church through leading, challenging, restoring, encouraging & protecting (1 Peter 5:1-4) - “teachers”
One who has the ability to comprehend and understand the Word of God and then can instruct, challenge, comfort, and warn from its truths (Matthew 28:19-20; 2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16)
The Assignments of the Gifted
- The Tasks of the Gifted
--“equipping”—to provide what is needed to be complete (Ephesians 4:12a) (Matthew 20:28a)
--“edifying”—to strengthen by instruction (Ephesians 4:12b) - The Target of the Gifted (Ephesians 4:13)
--“unity of the faith”—oneness
--“knowledge of the Son of God”—accurate
--“perfect man”—mature
--“fullness of Christ”—complete
“The Bible was not written to satisfy your curiosity, but to make you conform to Christ’s image. Not to make you a smarter sinner, but to make you like the Saviour. Not to fill your head with a collection of biblical facts, but to transform your life.” --Howard Hendricks
- The Testimony of the Gifted
--follows good doctrine (Ephesians 4:14a)
--not easily & comfortably deceived (Ephesians 4:14b)
--confronts lovingly (Ephesians 4:15a)
--belongs to a local church
--grows (Ephesians 4:15b)
--connects (Ephesians 4:16a)
--serves (Ephesians 4:16b)
The Aftermath of the Gifts (Ephesians 4:16c)
Application: We are called to put the love of God on display before a lost world—as individuals and as a Church Family. We do this when we walk in unity with one another while using the gifts God has given us to share His love with others. How are you doing with this call God has placed on your life?
