Message

FROM DEATH TO LIFE
Family Bonds—Parents & Children”
Ephesians 6:1-4

Introduction: The biggest deterrents to dysfunction in the home are love, honor, and respect. The fruits of love, honor and respect are obedience and discipline.

A Respect That Is Demanded

  • By Obeying (actions) (Ephesians 6:1)
    --to follow
    --to comply with
    --to submit to authority
  • By Honoring (attitude) (Ephesians 6:2a) (Deuteronomy 27:16a)
    --to give special consideration
    --to esteem highly
--to see as valuable  (Proverbs 1:8)

A Reward That Will Be Delivered

  • By Days that will be Lightened (Ephesians 6:2b, Ephesians 6:3a)
  • By Days that will be Lengthened (Ephesians 6:2b, Ephesians 6:3b) (Proverbs 3:1)

A Respect That Is Deserved

  • By Investing in our Children (Ephesians 6:4a) (Colossians 3:21)
  • By Disciplining our Children (Ephesians 6:4b) (Proverbs 13:24)
  • By Instructing our Children (Ephesians 6:4c)

Parenting in a nutshell: “Investing, disciplining, and instructing all work in unison in raising children.  I must invest time in my child to see what properly motivates them, then discipline them accordingly to earn the respect to instruct them in the ways of the Lord.”

Application:  The Costly Mistakes Parents Make:

Not Seeing the Big Picture
“Where there is no vision [no revelation of God],
      the people perish;
but he who keeps the law blessed is he.”
(Proverbs 29:18—Ampl Bible)

Not Teaching the Value of Authority
--authority provides for children (Ephesians 6:1-3a)
--authority protects children (Ephesians 6:3b)

Not Making their Faith Relevant  (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)

Not Instilling Responsibility (Result:  Entitlement(Proverbs 29:21)

Not Truly Building Self-Esteem (Philippians 2:5-8; 3:3-9)
