Message

THAT YOU MAY...
“JESUS PRAYS—THE GREAT MEDIATOR”
John 17:1-26

Introduction: John isn’t writing a Biography for Information; he’s writing an Invitation for Transformation – that you may Believe and that you may have Life. In John 17, we already find Jesus’ ministry transitioning from His earthly ministry to His heavenly intercessory role as a Mediator for our transformation.  (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Jesus’ Prayer Was Upward Focused—the Father (John 17:1a)

Jesus’ Prayer Was Inward Focused—Himself
His Purpose Was To:
  Glorify the Father (John 17:1b)
Reveal the Only True God (John 17:2-3)
Provide Redemption for Followers of Jesus (John 17:4)
Restore the Destruction Created by the Enemy and Sin (John 17:5)

Jesus’ Prayer Was Outward Focused—the Disciples
He Prayed:
For Their Singular Faithfulness (John 17:6-11)
For Their Secure Foundation (John 17:12-15)
For Their Spiritual Focus (John 17:16-19)

Jesus’ Prayer Was Onward Focused—the Coming Church
He Prayed:
For Our Labor To Be Unifying (John 17:20-23)
For Our Life To Be Undying (John 17:24)

Greek Word: “Boulomai” means to have a wish of a desire about something. This word is used of God's desires that may or may not come to pass depending upon the actions of others.    (John 10:10) (1 Peter 3:9)

For Our Love To Be Unfailing (John 17:25-26)

Conclusion: Based on what we read in John 17, Jesus is currently praying for our church and for you. This should blow our minds!

Application: Are His prayers being answered by you? Are you one who has believed--mentioned in verse 20--who is now a follower of Jesus? Are you one who helps promote and keeps unity in our church family, that we may continue the work, began by Jesus, to impact our community and the world for the Kingdom of God?
