A SEAT AT THE TABLE
“We Serve: Elders Serve by Leading”
1 Timothy 3:1-7

Introduction: The church belongs to Jesus, and He is our Lead Story. Jesus calls us to more than simply having a seat in the Room, He invites us to a seat at His Table to share in the Life and Mission of His church. At His table: We belong, we grow, we Serve, and we go.

What is an Elder?
- Elder (presbyteros): Spiritual Maturity
- Overseer (episkopos): Leadership Responsibility
- Shepherd/Pastor (poimen): Relational Ministry

Who is an Elder?
- A Man: God’s created Order (1 Timothy 3:1, 1 Timothy 2:11-13, Genesis 3:16, Ephesians 5:23)
- Above Reproach: Marked by Integrity (1 Timothy 3:2)
- Faithful in Marriage: A one-Woman man (1 Timothy 3:2)
- Self-Controlled & Respectable: A steady Mind & Manner (1 Timothy 3:2-3)
- Hospitable: An open Home (1 Timothy 3:2)
- Skilled in Teaching: A voice for Truth (1 Timothy 3:2, James 3:1)
- Gentle: Others before Self (1 Timothy 3:3)
- Free from the love of Money: A Content heart (1 Timothy 3:3)
- Faithful at Home: Intentional family Discipling (1 Timothy 3:4-5)
- Spiritually Mature: Proven over Time (1 Timothy 3:6)
- Good Reputation with outsiders: A credible Witness (1 Timothy 3:7)

What does an Elder do?
- Guide Vision: Shared & Prayerful direction (Proverbs 15:22)
- Teach: Biblical truth Taught & Guarded (Acts 20:28-29)
- Shepherd: Personal Care for souls (Hebrews 13:17)
- Discipline: Loving correction toward Restoration (Titus 1:9)

Why Lay-Elders?
- It is the Pattern of the New Testament church (1 Timothy 5:17-18)
- It provides greater Accountability and Support for the Pastoral staff
- It strengthens Shepherding and congregational Care
- It correctly defines the Biblical role of Deacons at PCC
     o Elders Shepherd & Oversee 
     o Deacons Serve & Support
