ENCOUNTER At The Temple Mount Steps
John 8:2-12; Colossians 3:5-17

Introduction: It is amazing to think that the transformation God desires for you can replace your shame and guilt with His grace and forgiveness. But it only occurs when you encounter Him.

Definition of Shame:
--a painful emotion caused by guilt
--a condition of humiliating disgrace
--at its worst can manifest itself in self-hatred 

Results of Shame:
--creates a works-based acceptance before God
--creates a low self-esteem
--creates barriers to intimacy
--creates the victim personality
--creates hopelessness (2 Corinthians 5:19-21)

--the sinner (John 8:3b)

--the Scripture (John 8:5-6a)

An Advocate & His Approach

The Truth (John 8:6b-9)

The Terms 
--Jesus faced her (John 8:10)
--Jesus forgave her (John 8:11)
--Jesus freed her (John 8:12) 

Conclusion: Shame destroys your potential for an abundant life. When shame lies at the core of your identity, it may be so pervasive that you cannot put your finger on it. You may have never identified it by name, even though it is powerfully present. Hence shame can manifest itself as a deep-seated feeling that something is fundamentally wrong.

Although the enemy wants to convince you that you always will be a prisoner of your failures and past experiences, God’s grace can free you from the shame of your past and give you a new life in Him.

Application: The Path of Transformation for those with a Shame-based Identity:

• Reject Your Old Life—Shame (Colossians 3:5-9) (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
• Renew Your Mind—Truth (Colossians 3:10-11) (Romans 12:2)
• Receive Your New Life—Forgiveness (Colossians 3:12-17)  (2 Corinthians 5:17)
