SUMMER IN THE PSALMS
PSALM 23

Introduction: It appears that David writes this psalm later in life, describing God’s care for him. He compares himself and us to sheep (a vulnerable, weak, foolish animal) and of course, God, as the Shepherd.

Our Provision Is In God  (John 10:10b-14)

  • Physical Needs
we are content in Him (Psalm 23:1)
we are refreshed by Him through rest & peace (Psalm 23:2)
  • Spiritual Needs
we are restored from our worst (Psalm 23:3a)
we are redirected to His best (Psalm 23:3b)

Our Protection Is In God

  • Over Fear
we have victory over death (Psalm 23:4a)
we have victory over evil (Psalm 23:4b)
we have His presence (Psalm 23:4c)
  • Over Danger
we have victory over enemies (Psalm 23:5a)
we have victory over harm (Psalm 23:5b)
we have His abundance (Psalm 23:5c)

Our Preservation Is In God

  • Each Day
we have our needs met through His “goodness” (Psalm 23:6a)
we have our sins forgiven through His “mercy” (Psalm 23:6b)
  • Eternity
we have a home with God—His presence (Psalm 23:6c)
we have a home in Heaven—His place (Psalm 23:6d)

“Do not let your heart be troubled (afraid, cowardly). Believe [confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me.

In My Father’s house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and I will take you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also.”  (John 14:1-3—Amplified Bible)

Application: The 23rd Psalm is a collection of promises that can only be realized in your heart, when you find contentment in God, through the provision of His Son, Jesus. Do you find contentment in Jesus, or is there still a void in your soul you are trying to fill with the things of this world? The journey of this psalm leads you to joy and peace. Have you found it?
