SUMMER IN THE PSALMS
PSALM 77

Introduction: When in the midst of trials or distress, how do you battle the inevitable doubt and questioning which arises to challenge the strength and quality of your faith? Psalm 77 provides some specific insights into dealing with and living in the middle of the distress; when the end is not only out of view, but also when you are beginning to have doubts not just about yourself, but also God’s intentions.

A Cry for Help

Emotional Anguish  (Psalm 77:1)
Spiritual Anxiety  (Psalm 77:2)
Physical Fatigue  (Psalm 77:3-4)
Mental Exhaustion  (Psalm 77:5-6)

A Crisis of Faith

Will God always reject me? (Psalm 77:7a)
Will God ever care for me and bless me again? (Psalm 77:7b)
Will God ever show me mercy again?  (Psalm 77:8a)
Will God do what He says He will do?  (Psalm 77:8b)
Will God ever forgive me?  (Psalm 77:9a)
Will God always be angry with me?  (Psalm 77:9b)

A Challenge to Remember

Remember who He is (Psalm 77:10, Psalm 77:13-14, Psalm 77:16-18)
Remember what He has done (Psalm 77:11-12, Psalm 77:15, Psalm 77:19-20)

Application:  The Red Sea Rules:

  1. Realize that God means for you to be where you are
  2. Be more concerned about God’s glory than your relief
  3. Acknowledge your distress, but keep your eyes on the Lord
  4. Pray!
  5. Stay calm and confident, and give God time to work
  6. When unsure, just take the next logical step of faith
  7. Envision God’s enveloping presence
  8. Trust God to deliver in His own unique way
  9. View your current crisis as a faith builder for the future
  10. Don’t forget to praise Him
