ROOTED—“70 Days of Growing Deep”
Week 1—Loving God—Corporate Worship

Worship is more than a song or lyric--it’s more than what we do with our mouths. It's what we do with our hearts, heads, and hands as well. When we gather, the intention of our worship is to sing His praises, celebrate what He is doing, hear and respond to His Word, and give to His compassions.

However, worship is not just an hour that we gather each week. Worship is a lifestyle in which the songs we are singing and the message we are hearing on Sunday echoes throughout the week. Worship is magnifying Jesus everywhere, all the time.

Introduction: Worship is literally expressing highest value to God through our lives in response to who He is and His love for us.

Receiving God’s Love For Us—Salvation  (Romans 5)

  • Our Condition of Hopelessness:
-- We were “without strength” (Romans 5:6a)
-- We were “ungodly” (Romans 5:6b)
    -- We were “sinner(s)” (Romans 5:7-8)
-- We were objects of God’s “wrath” (Romans 5:9)
    -- We were God’s “enemy” (Romans 5:10)
  • His Demonstration of Love:
-- He “died” for us (Romans 5:6-8)
-- He “justified” us (Romans 5:9a)
-- He “saved” us (Romans 5:9b)
-- He “reconciled” us (Romans 5:10)

Responding to God’ss Love For Us—Worship

  • Worship is Sacrificing Our Worldly Ambitions to God (Luke 9:23)
  • Worship is Focusing Our Attention on God (Matthew 6:6)
  • Worship is Expressing Our Affection to God (Mark 12:29-30)
-- “with all your heart”—a pure love

“We too easily open the door of our heart. Anger shows up and we open the door. Revenge needs a place to stay, so we have him pull up a chair. Pity wants to have a party, so we show him the kitchen. Lust rings the bell, and we change the bed sheets.

With everything attacking our heart and fighting to get in, Jesus stands at the door and knocks. But understand this, He only wants in if He can have your heart to Himself.”   Max Lucado

-- “with all your soul”—a passionate love
-- “with all your mind”—a perceptive love
-- “with all your strength”—a practical love

  • Worship is Using Our Abilities for God (Colossians 3:23)

“If what we call love does not take us beyond ourselves, it is not really love. If we have the idea that love is characterized as cautious, wise, sensible, and never taken to extremes--radical then we have missed love’s true meaning.

This may describe affection and it may bring us a warm feeling, but it is not a true and accurate description of love.

Have you ever been driven to do something for God not because you felt that it was useful or your duty to do so, or that there was anything in it for you, but simply because you love Him? Have you ever realized that you can give things to God that are of value to Him?

Or are you just sitting around daydreaming about the greatness of His redemption, while neglecting the things you could be doing for Him?” Oswald Chambers

Application: What are you worshipping?  It is:

--whatever you are giving your greatest ambitions to
--whatever you are giving your greatest attention to
--whatever you are giving your greatest affections to
--whatever you are giving your greatest abilities to

Conclusion: Worship is magnifying Jesus (making Him large).

The heart of true worship:

And Mary said,

‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;

for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.

For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.” (Luke 1:46-49)
