ROOTED—“70 Days of Growing Deep”
Week 8—Reaching the World—Ministry—Barriers & Motivation
Introduction: As a church family, we are called by God to Reach the World with the gospel of Jesus Christ. He accomplishes this through the individuals He places in the local church. He uses five things to shape us for ministry—for service: our Spiritual Gift(s), our Heart, our Abilities, our Personality, and our Experiences. Our purpose and significance in life comes from our serving. (Matthew 20:28) (Matthew 28:18-20a) (Luke 4:18)
What Are Our Barriers to Serving?
- Self-Centeredness (Philippians 2:4)
- Perfectionism (Ecclesiastes 11:4)
- Materialism (Luke 16:13)
- Comparing & Criticizing (Philippians 2:13-14)
- Wrong Motives (Matthew 6:1)
What Are Our Motivations for Serving? (1 Corinthians 3-4)
- The Examination of Our Motives
--right motives produce gold, silver, precious stones (1 Corinthians 3:12a)
--wrong motives produce wood, hay, straw (1 Corinthians 3:12b)
- The Manifestation of Our Motives (1 Corinthians 4:4-5)
--motives are chosen
--motives are covered
--motives are (quiet often) corrupted
- The Evaluation of Our Motives
--right motives are enduring (valuable) (1 Corinthians 3:14)
--wrong motives are loss (useless) (1 Corinthians 3:15) (John 17:4)
Application: What are you doing with what God has given you (gifts, resources, etc)? What is your motivation for serving Him? Will your service be lasting or lost?
Questions We Need To Ask Ourselves:
What should our Church be known for in our community?
Is our Church growing both spiritually and numerically?
Is there a clear path to help people take steps in their faith with the ultimate goal of helping them become fully-devoted followers of Jesus Christ?
Have we taken the time to identify what a fully-devoted follower of Christ looks like?
Are we empowering people to do God’s work?
Are we developing leaders?
Is our community any different because of our ministry?
Is your community any different because of your ministry?
