FINAL WORDS
“Final Words of Jesus’ Accusers”
Selected Passages
Introduction: In the gospel accounts of Jesus’ ministry, we read that He had many accusers, as well as admirers. His accusers ranged from surprisingly the religious who maliciously demanded His execution to the political leaders who found no fault in Him, yet still yielded to pressures to execute Him. Jesus’ accusers were blinded by their misplaced expectations, their delusional egos, and their envious spirit.
The Famous Final Words Of:
The Religious Officials
--the High Priest (Matthew 26:57-65)
--the Sanhedrin (Matthew 26:66-68)
The Roman Officers
--Pilate (Luke 23:1-5; 13-16) (John 18:36-37a)
--Herod (Luke 23:6-11)
The Remaining Others
--Judas (Matthew 26:14-16, 23-25, 49; Matthew 27:3-5)
--The Crowd (Luke 23:17-25)
Application: As seen in the previous passages, the main accusation of 1st century religion was that Jesus was and is not who He said He was. The same accusation has lived on into the 21st century.
Religion has and always will misrepresent Jesus. We as followers of Christ are called to give an accurate view of Jesus to a lost and dying world.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son….” (Romans 8:28-29)
