FINAL WORDS
Final Words of Jesus On the Cross”
Selected Passages

Introduction: Jesus’s final words on the cross were very calculated, and revealed much about who He was and is and His purpose and mission.

Jesus’ Last Words While On The Cross:

A Message of Forgiveness not Exoneration

Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them,
for they do not know what they do’….”
(Luke 23:34)

“In Him we have redemption through His blood,
the forgiveness of sins,
according to the riches of His grace.”
(Ephesians 1:7)

A Message of Salvation

“Then he said to Jesus, ‘Lord, remember me
when You come into Your kingdom.’”
And Jesus said to him ,
‘Assuredly, I say to you,
today you will be with Me in Paradise.’”
(Luke 23:42-43)

“For with the heart
one believes unto righteousness,
and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation.
For the Scripture says,
‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.’”
(Romans 10:10-11)

A Message of Desolation & Isolation

“…Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying,…,
‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?”
(Matthew 27:46)

A Message of Compassion

“…He said to His mother,
‘Woman, behold thy Son!’
Then He said to the disciple,
‘Behold your mother!…”
(John 19:26-27)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He has anointed Me
to preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”
(Luke 4:18)

A Message of Identification

“…(He) said, ‘I thirst!’”  (John 19:28)

“In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.”
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,
full of grace and truth.”
(John 1:1, 17)

Pilate therefore said to Him (Jesus),
‘Are You a king then?’
Jesus answered,
‘You say rightly that I am a king.
For this cause I was born,
and for this cause I have come into the world,
that I should bear witness to the truth.”
(John 18:37a)

“For we do not have a High Priest
who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses,
but was in all points tempted
as we are, yet without sin.”
(Hebrews 4:15)

A Message of Redemption & Perfection

“…He said, ‘It is finished!’….”
(John 19:30)

He (Jesus) has delivered us
from the power of darkness
and conveyed us
into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
in whom we have redemption through His blood,
the forgiveness of sins.”
(Colossians 1:13-14)

For by one offering He has perfected forever
those who are being sanctified.”
(Hebrews 10:14)

“For He (God the Father) made Him (Jesus)
who knew no sin to be sin for us,
that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
(2 Corinthians 5:21)

A Message of Completion

“And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice,
He said, ‘Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit….’
Having said this He breathed His last.”
(Luke 23:46)

Jesus said, “No one takes it (my life) from Me,
but I lay it down of Myself.
I have power to lay it down,
and I have power to take it again.”
(John 10:18)

Application: The message of the cross incites a response—to follow or ignore. The message of the cross also demands reflection—to remember and identify with.
